Lois Burwell (born 1960) is a British Oscar-winning makeup artist. She won the Best Makeup Oscar at the 68th Academy Awards for the film Braveheart , which she shared with Peter Frampton and Paul Pattison. [1] She received her second Academy Award nomination at the 71st Academy Awards for Saving Private Ryan (losing to Elizabeth ), which she shared with Conor O'Sullivan and Daniel C. Striepeke. [2] She frequently collaborates with Steven Spielberg, having worked on five of his films. [3]

Personal life

Burwell is married to cinematographer John Toll. [4] They have worked together on The Rainmaker , Almost Famous , Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and The Last Samurai . [4]

She holds dual citizenships in the United States and the United Kingdom. [5]

Positions

In 2015, Burwell was elected the Governor for the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and in 2017, she was elected the first Vice President of the Academy. [6]

For the 7th season of Face Off Burwell replaced judge Ve Neill who was not able to be present for the competition. [7]

John Toll, ASC is an American cinematographer and television producer. Toll's filmography spans a wide variety of genres, including epic period drama, comedy, science fiction, and contemporary drama. He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in both 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart respectively, and has also won numerous BAFTA, ASC, and Satellite Awards. He has collaborated with such directors as Francis Ford Coppola, Edward Zwick, Terrence Malick, Mel Gibson, Cameron Crowe, The Wachowskis, and Ang Lee.

Ron Judkins is an American production sound mixer and writer-director. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and has been nominated for another three in the same category. He is also the winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Sound for Schindler's List in 1996. In 2004 and 2012 he was a nominee for the Primetime Emmy Award for his work on Ike: Countdown to D-Day and Hemingway & Gellhorn. His work on Hemingway & Gellhorn also won the Online Film & Television Association award. Paul won the APDG and AACTA Awards for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 and Lambs of God in 2019. He is also known for his work on The Cave.

Daniel Charles Striepeke was an American makeup artist who was nominated for two Academy Awards and who has often done make-up on Tom Hanks films. With a 40-year career he did makeup on over 100 films. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards in 2004. He also worked on TV shows such as Lost in Space.
