Makahu is a settlement in inland Taranaki, in the western North Island of New Zealand. It is located to the southeast of Strathmore. the Makahu Stream runs south through the area to join with the Mangaehu Stream, which flows into the Patea River. [1] [2]
The name "Makahu" means "White Hawk". [3]
Makahu is in an SA1 statistical area which covers 470.41 km2 (181.63 sq mi) [4] and includes an area within the Stratford District east of Strathmore. The SA1 area is part of the larger Douglas statistical area. [5]

The SA1 area had a population of 204 at the 2018 New Zealand census, an increase of 36 people (21.4%) since the 2013 census, and a decrease of 12 people (−5.6%) since the 2006 census. There were 72 households, comprising 108 males and 96 females, giving a sex ratio of 1.12 males per female. The median age was 35.7 years (compared with 37.4 years nationally), with 54 people (26.5%) aged under 15 years, 30 (14.7%) aged 15 to 29, 87 (42.6%) aged 30 to 64, and 30 (14.7%) aged 65 or older.
Ethnicities were 97.1% European/Pākehā, 11.8% Māori, and 1.5% other ethnicities. People may identify with more than one ethnicity.
Although some people chose not to answer the census's question about religious affiliation, 52.9% had no religion, 38.2% were Christian and 1.5% had other religions.
Of those at least 15 years old, 15 (10.0%) people had a bachelor's or higher degree, and 30 (20.0%) people had no formal qualifications. The median income was $32,900, compared with $31,800 nationally. 18 people (12.0%) earned over $70,000 compared to 17.2% nationally. The employment status of those at least 15 was that 87 (58.0%) people were employed full-time, 27 (18.0%) were part-time, and 6 (4.0%) were unemployed. [6]
Makahu School is a coeducational full primary school (years 1–8) [7] with a roll of 11 as of February 2024. [8] The school was founded in 1905. [3] [9]
Kaingaroa is a locality in the Far North District of New Zealand. It lies on State Highway 10 north-east of Awanui and Kaitaia, and south-west of Karikari Peninsula.
Tautoro is a locality about 8 km south-southeast of Kaikohe in Northland, New Zealand. Further to the south is the Awarua rural community.
Te Kao is a village on the Aupouri Peninsula of Northland, New Zealand. Te Aupōuri are mana whenua over Te Kao and the surrounding district, and it is the principal settlement of the iwi (tribe). Te Aupōuri's Post-Settlement Governance Entity, Te Runanga Nui o Te Aupōuri, has an office at Te Kao, along with the iwi's marae and urupa. State Highway 1 passes through the district. Broadwood is a town about 25 km to the north of the north side of the Hokianga harbour, in Northland, New Zealand. Herekino is 21 km to the west, and Mangamuka Bridge is the same distance to the east.

Waiharara is a community at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula in Northland, New Zealand. State Highway 1 runs through the community. To the west is Aupouri Forest, and beyond that Ninety Mile Beach. To the east is Rangaunu Harbour. Houhora is 22 km north west, and Awanui is 16 km south east. Lake Waiparera, 35 metres above sea level, is immediately to the north west.
Coroglen is a locality in the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. It lies on State Highway 25, 18 kilometres south of Whitianga and 26 kilometres north west of Tairua. The "Tapu-Coroglen Road", a windy gravel road, connects it across the Coromandel Range with Tapu on the west coast of the peninsula.

Karetu is a community in the Northland Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Kawakawa is to the west, and Waikare is northeast. The Karetu River flows from the Russell Forest in the southeast through Karetu, and joins the Kawakawa River shortly before it flows into the Bay of Islands.
Motatau or Mōtatau is a locality in the Northland Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Maromaku is to the east. The Taikirau Stream flows from east through Motatau and then runs northwest to join the Waiharakeke Stream. The North Auckland Line runs through Motatau.
Rawhitiroa is a locality situated in South Taranaki, New Zealand. It is positioned approximately 6.5 km east of Eltham.
Waioneke is a locality on the Te Korowai-o-Te-Tonga Peninsula of the Kaipara Harbour, in the Rodney District of New Zealand. Parakai is 22 km to the south-east, and the road continues another 14 km to the north-west. Rangitira Beach and Woodhill Forest are to the west, and Omokoiti Flats and the southern Kaipara Harbour are to the east.
