Middle Beach is a small town in South Australia located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the Adelaide Plains Council.

South Australia is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It covers some of the most arid parts of the country. With a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth-largest of Australia's states and territories by area, and fifth largest by population. It has a total of 1.7 million people, and its population is the second most highly centralised in Australia, after Western Australia, with more than 77 percent of South Australians living in the capital, Adelaide, or its environs. Other population centres in the state are relatively small; Mount Gambier, the second largest centre, has a population of 28,684.

Adelaide city centre is the innermost locality of Greater Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is known by locals simply as "The City" or "Town" to distinguish it from Greater Adelaide and from the City of Adelaide. The locality is split into two key geographical distinctions: the city "square mile", bordered by North, East, South and West Terraces; and the section of the parklands south of the River Torrens which separates the built up part of the city from the surrounding suburbs and North Adelaide.

The Adelaide Plains Council is a local government area in South Australia. It consists of a largely rural region along the Gulf St Vincent, covering a total area of approximately 926 km². The council seat lies at Mallala, but it also maintains a service centre at Two Wells.

Demographics

The 2006 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 366 persons on Middle Beach on census night. Of these, 55.2% were male and 44.8% were female.^[1]

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is the independent statistical agency of the Government of Australia. The majority of residents (66.1%) are of Australian birth, with other common census responses being England (4.6%) and Netherlands (3.0%).^[1]

The European portion of the Netherlands consists of twelve separate provinces that border Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest, with maritime borders in the North Sea with Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. Together with three island territories in the Caribbean Sea—Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba— it forms a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The official language is Dutch, but a secondary official language in the province of Friesland is West Frisian.

The age distribution of Middle Beach residents is comparable to that of the greater Australian population. 68.8% of residents were over 25 years in 2006, compared to the Australian average of 66.5%; and 31.2% were younger than 25 years, compared to the Australian average of 33.5%.^[1]

Attractions

Middle Beach is notable for its samphire swamplands and fishing in the mangroves. A boat ramp and small creek are located at the southern end of the shellgrit beach.

Samphire is a name given to a number of succulent halophytes that tend to be associated with water bodies.

Transport

Middle Beach is located beside Port Wakefield Road.

Port Wakefield Road is an important Australian highway. It connects Adelaide, the South Australian capital, to the Yorke Peninsula, Port Augusta, northern and western South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. It is designated National Highway A1 and a part of the National Highway. It is named after Port Wakefield, the first government town north of Adelaide.
