Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric US Holdings, Inc., which, in its turn, is the principal subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric in the United States. MERL is the North American arm of the Corporate R&D organization of Mitsubishi Electric. It is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.

MERL engages in application-motivated basic research and advanced development in areas of importance to Mitsubishi Electric. More than 50 PhDs pursue research and advanced development in a wide range of areas including digital signal processing, digital audio and video processing, wired and wireless digital communications, spoken language interfaces, computer vision, mechatronics and fundamental algorithms. Since 1991, MERL has been awarded more than 700 patents. [2] [3]

History

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1991 by the Mitsubishi Electric CR&D organization. In the late 1990s, MERL merged with two other laboratories that were part of Mitsubishi Electric. This consolidated all of Mitsubishi Electric’s North American research into one organization, creating the MERL that exists today. Richard C. Waters, was a founding member of MERL and has been president since 1999. [1]

László Bélády was the head of MERL from 1991 to 1998, [4] [5] James D. Foley, who co-authored several of the most widely used university textbooks on computer graphics, was the president from 1998 to 1999.

Multimedia: Efficient acquisition, representation, processing, security, and interaction of multimedia.

Data Analytics: Predictive analytics, decision analytics, modeling, simulation, and optimization.

Spatial Analysis: Processing data from across space and time to extract meaning and build representations of objects and events in the world.

Mechatronics: Advanced control.

An Algorithms group supports all five sectors, developing fundamental algorithms.

Saffron has been licensed to Adobe and Monotype and is shipping in numerous products such as the Adobe Flash Player and Amazon Kindle. Saffron has been implemented in both software and hardware.

László "Les" Bélády was a Hungarian computer scientist notable for devising the Bélády's Min theoretical memory caching algorithm in 1966 while working at IBM Research. He also demonstrated the existence of a Bélády's anomaly. During the 1980s, he was the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering.

The College of Computer Studies (CCS) is one of the eight colleges of De La Salle University. It was established in 1981 as the Center for Planning, Information, and Computer Science offering only a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. The department was formally declared as a college in 1984. In 1990, the college was transferred to its new building, the INTELLECT Building, which was eventually renamed as the Gokongwei Building. In 1996 the college was granted semi-autonomous status along with the Graduate School of Business which led to the establishment of De La Salle-Professional Schools, Inc. Peraton Labs, previously branded as "Applied Communication Sciences," is a communications and information research and engineering company based in the United States. Previously the R&D arm of Telcordia Technologies, the company became a business of Vencore, Inc in 2013. It was then known as Vencore Labs until 2018 when its parent company merged to form Perspecta Inc. Perspecta merged with Peraton and is now Peraton Labs, which is headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, with laboratory facilities in Basking Ridge, Red Bank, NJ, and Silver Spring, MD.

NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology was established in 1985 and offers ABET and ATMAE accredited programs in engineering and engineering technology. The college offers degree programs in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, engineering technology, and industrial technology.
