Thomas Mxolisi Kaunda (born 13 September 1972) is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal serving as the Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality since 2019. He was the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport,Community Safety and Liaison from 2016 to 2019 and a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2009 to 2019. Kaunda is a member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). [2] [3] [4]
Kaunda was born on 13 September 1972,in the town of Inanda outside Durban in the Natal Province. He became involved in politics at the age of fifteen,as he joined the Congress of South African Students (COSAS). He matriculated from Intshisekelo High School and then went on to study at the University of South Africa,where he achieved a Diploma in Governance and Leadership. He later studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained an Advanced Diploma in Advanced Governance and Public Leadership. [5]
In 2000,Kaunda was elected as a ward councillor of the newly established eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality,a position he held until the 2006 municipal election when he became a PR councillor of the municipality. He served on the municipal Economic Development and Markets Sub-Committee. [5] [6]
He was deployed to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature following the 2009 general election. In his first term as an MPL,he served as Chairperson of the Transport Portfolio Committee. He was a member of the Finance,Community Safety and Liaison committees. Kaunda was also an alternate member of the Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs committees. [5] [6]
Following his re-election in 2014,he remained Chairperson of the Transport Committee and became a member of the legislature's Economic Development,Tourism and Environmental Affairs,and Community Safety and Liaison committees. [5] [6]
In June 2016,newly elected Premier Willies Mchunu appointed Kaunda as the MEC for Transport,Community Safety and Liaison. [7] Sihle Zikalala was elected Premier in May 2019,and he retained Kaunda in his post. [8]
In addition to holding public office,Kaunda has also held multiple ANC party leadership positions. He was elected to the post of ANCYL Provincial Secretary in 2004 and served until 2008 when he was appointed ANCYL Provincial Chairperson,a post he held until 2010. He has been a member of the ANC's Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) since 2012. Kaunda is also a Provincial Working Committee (PWC) member. [5] [6]
In August 2019,after months of legal challenges and infighting controversies,the ANC KwaZulu-Natal branch officially recalled Zandile Gumede as Mayor of eThekwini on 13 August 2019. [9] [10] Kaunda was seen as one of three frontrunners for the post alongside Nomusa Dube-Ncube and Nhlanhla Ngidi. [11] Kaunda was ultimately selected for the post on 22 August 2019. [12] Gumede tendered her resignation as mayor on 26 August 2019,but withdrew it on 29 August 2019. [13] [14] This move from Gumede resulted in the monthly council sitting,which was supposed to elect new leadership,being delayed. [15] Gumede officially resigned on 3 September 2019. [16] Kaunda was elected Mayor of eThekwini on 5 September 2019. [17] [18]
Bongiwe Nomusa Sithole-Moloi (née Sithole) has served as KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since February 2023. She has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2014.
Zandile Ruth Thelma Gumede is a South African who has been serving as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2020. She served as the Executive Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality from 2016 until 2019. Gumede is a member of the African National Congress. And the current Chair Person of the African National Congress (ANC) at EThekwini Region.
Zwakele Maxwell Mncwango is a South African politician who is the provincial chairperson of ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal. He was a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2018 to 2022 and served as the Leader of the Opposition in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2018 to 2019. He was the Provincial Leader of the KwaZulu-Natal Democratic Alliance (DA) from 2015 to 2021. Mncwango was the party's KwaZulu-Natal Premier candidate for the 2019 election.
Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu is a South African lawyer and African National Congress (ANC) politician who has been serving as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health since May 2019. She became a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in May 2014. She was the chair of the legislature's Agriculture Portfolio Committee from 2014 to 2019. Simelane-Zulu was previously involved in the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).
Siphosihle Emmanuel Hlomuka is a South African politician who is the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport,Community Safety and Liaison in KwaZulu-Natal,having been appointed in August 2022. He served as the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs from May 2019 to August 2022. Hlomuka was sworn in as a Member of the Provincial Legislature in May 2019. He is the current deputy provincial secretary of the African National Congress.

Muntukayise Bhekuyise Ntuli was a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 1999 to 2003,when he resigned amid fraud allegations. He was then elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2009. On 11 September 2019,Ntuli became the Member of the Executive Council for Transport,Community Safety &Liaison,replacing Mxolisi Kaunda,who was elected Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Ntuli died on 16 January 2021,from complications of COVID-19.

He served as the Deputy Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality from 2021 until 2022. He is the founder and current leader of the Abantu Batho Congress,a party he founded in early-2020 after he resigned from the National Freedom Party (NFP).
Ntuthuko Mbongiseni Sibiya,known as Jomo Sibiya,is a South African politician who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal from March 2021 until August 2022. A member of the African National Congress,Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2014.
Mbalenhle Cleopatra Frazer,commonly known as Mbali Frazer,is a South African politician and former educator who has been KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education since August 2022. Belinda Francis Scott,formerly Belinda Barrett,is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2014 to 2019. She served several terms in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2019,representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2002 onwards after defecting from both the Democratic Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party. After she left the provincial legislature in 2019,she served as Deputy Mayor of eThekwini from September 2019 until she resigned from politics in February 2021.
The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has finally agreed on a new mayor-elect for the eThekwini metro - and it is current Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda.
