Nelson Brass Academy

The Nelson City Brass Youth Academy comprises 3 bands in the British Brass Band style, the Junior, Youth and Lake Rotoiti Bands in Nelson City Brass. The band was formed in August 2006. The Nelson City Brass Academy Band has over 10 members at present, playing in competitions and community events across the region and New Zealand.

Several Band members have gone on to take part in the New Zealand Secondary Schools and Youth Brass Bands.

In 2010 the youth band competed in their inaugural national Championships in Dunedin, entering in the youth and D grade. Along the way the band was lucky enough to be sponsored by Vivace instruments, which made a significant contribution to the band's ability to develop. The band has also received funding from the Canterbury Community Trust and Pub Charities in the past. The band was able to win Youth grade becoming National Champions in the process with 1st Trombone Fenella Deans winning the best soloist award. The band repeated this performance in 2012 in Timaru with 12-year-old cornet player Logan Ford taking away the soloist award and the band is preparing to repeat this feat in 2013 in New Plymouth. In 2011 the academy won the SOUNZ community commission project allowing them to have a piece composed especially for them by prominent New Zealand composer John Rimmer entitled Riffs 'n Ructions. Dudley Bright was appointed Principal Trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2001 and retired from that position in June 2018. Prior to that, he held the same position with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Halle Orchestra and before that briefly as an associate with the LSO. He is also Professor of Trombone at the Royal Academy of Music.

Rebirth Brass Band American brass band from New Orleans, Louisiana


The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans brass band. The group was founded in 1983 by Phillip "Tuba Phil" Frazier, his brother Keith Frazier, Kermit Ruffins, and classmates from Joseph S. Clark Senior High School, which closed in the spring of 2018, in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans. Arhoolie released its first album in 1984.

There are five main brass band sections in the United Kingdom: Championship, First, Second, Third, and Fourth. Sometimes, a Youth section is also used, but this is not graded.

Founded in 1976, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO) is the oldest and largest youth orchestra program in northwest Illinois and is composed of three full orchestras, two string orchestras, a brass choir, a percussion ensemble, and a large Chamber Music Institute.

Triangle Youth Brass Band (TYBB) a national award-winning British style brass band located in Raleigh, North Carolina that was formed in 1997 as a youth component of the Triangle Brass Band (TBB). Under the direction of Jesse Rackley, Matt Edwards, and Robin Gorham. The Youth Band program serves nearly 100 high school-aged musicians in three separate bands, Triangle Youth J. Perry Watson Brass Band (Watson), the Triangle Youth Brass Band (TYBB) and the Triangle Youth Academy Brass Band (TYABB). All three bands have done performances outside the triangle area, including tours to North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) championships. The three bands also perform locally and regionally as ambassadors of the British brass band tradition.

Charles Trussell

Charles Trussell aka Carlile Vernon, was a prominent musician in brass bands both in Australia and New Zealand during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He served as band master of a number of bands in both countries and was a significant composer and arranger of brass band music. He also was an adjudicator at brass band contests. He is also believed to have written vocal music. He is not to be confused with American banjoist and composer H. C. Trussell who was also active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Nelson Garrison Band was a military brass band in the New Zealand Army that served the citizens of the city of Nelson in the eastern shores of Tasman Bay. It was one of 5 garrison bands in the New Zealand Army and is considered by many to be the country's first brass band. Its legacy is retained today through the Nelson City Band. During its existence, the band had served as the premier brass band in the city of Nelson, often working with other brass bands such as the Nelson Citizen's Silver Band.

Rodger Fox New Zealand trombone player and jazz band leader

Rodger Denis Fox is a New Zealand trombonist, jazz educator, recording artist and leader of the Rodger Fox Big Band. He founded his jazz band in 1973 and has toured extensively in New Zealand and overseas, playing at international jazz festivals including Montreux and Monterey. He is a jazz educator and teaches at the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington.
