North Dakota State University is a public land-grant research university in Fargo, North Dakota. It was founded as North Dakota Agricultural College in 1890 as the state's land-grant university. As of 2021, NDSU offers 94 undergraduate majors, 146 undergraduate degree programs, 5 undergraduate certificate programs, 84 undergraduate minors, 87 master's degree programs, 51 doctoral degree programs of study, and 210 graduate certificate programs. It is classified among "R1-Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity".
Newman Outdoor Field is a baseball stadium in Fargo, North Dakota. It is located on the campus of North Dakota State University and is the home of the independent American Association's Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the North Dakota State Bison baseball team.

On March 10, 2009 the Bison made their biggest comeback in school history with a 66–64 win over Oakland University to win the Summit League tournament championship and became the first team since Southwestern Louisiana in 1972 to advance to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in their first year of eligibility.

He was the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at North Dakota State from 2014 to 2021. Prior to North Dakota State, Oakes was an assistant for South Dakota State and Minnesota.

The Bison play their home games at Newman Outdoor Field adjacent to NDSU's campus. The team was coached by Tod Brown in his 14th season at NDSU. The Bison won the Summit League tournament for the second time since entering Division 1 and first time since the 2014 season. After entering the NCAA tournament the Bison went 1-2 and were eliminated after being defeated by No. 7 overall Stanford and No. 17 overall UC Irvine. They defeated Nevada for the team's first ever NCAA Division I Tournament game win.

The Bison entered the Summit League tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. They lost to Omaha to start the tournament, then beat South Dakota State to advance to the semifinals, before falling to Omaha yet again to be eliminated from the tournament. NDSU finished the season with a 31-19 record and a 17-5 record in the Summit League, the second of which is their best for the program since entering Division I.
The 2019 North Dakota State Bison softball team was an American college softball team that represented North Dakota State University during the 2019 NCAA Division I softball season. The Bison were led by Darren Mueller in his 18th season, and played their home games at Tharaldson Park. They competed in the Summit League, where they finished the season with a 42–16 record, also finishing 16–2 in conference play.
The 2022–23 North Dakota State Bison women's basketball team represents North Dakota State University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Bison, led by 4th year head coach Jory Collins, play their home games at the Scheels Center, as members of the Summit League. After NDSU's win over St. Thomas on February 23, the Bison clinched their highest Division I win count since 2008. The Bison clinched the second seed in the Summit League tournament, the highest mark in a conference tournament since their Division II days.

The Bison finished the season with a 20–30–1 overall record and a 14–12–1 record, which was good for third in the Summit League. NDSU made the Summit League tournament as the second seed, since regular season winner St. Thomas was ineligible, and played Oral Roberts in the first round. The Bison would fall to the Golden Eagles, defeat top-seeded Omaha in the first elimination game, but fell to Northern Colorado in extra innings in the second elimination game.
