The North Dakota State Bison wrestling team represents North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. The Bison currently compete in the Big 12 Conference (NDSU's primary conference, The Summit League, does not have wrestling) and wrestle their home duals at the Scheels Center. NDSU is currently coached by Obe Blanc.

History

North Dakota State wrestling began in 1957 when head coach Tom Neuberger led the team to victory in their first dual meet against Valley City State University. Neuberger passed the coaching reins to Bucky Maughan in 1964. Since that time, NDSU has won four NCAA Division II wrestling titles, 30 individual national champions, and 159 All-Americans. [1] The first individual National Champions were Bob Backlund and Bill Demaray in 1971. The team has since transitioned to NCAA Division I and emerged from reclassification in 2007.

The Bison have had only three permanent head wrestling coaches in their history. Tom Nueberger coached the team from 1957-1963. During that time, Don Lemnus served as acting coach in 1961. In 1964 National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Bucky Maughan took over the program and led the team through four Division II team titles and NDSU's transition to Division I. On May 17, 2011 Bucky Maughan announced his retirement. His replacement would eventually be Roger Kish, who was a two-time NCAA runner-up at the University of Minnesota. Kish left after 12 years in 2023 and was replaced by Obe Blanc, an All-American wrestler for Lock Haven University and former assistant at North Carolina State University and NDSU.

In 2013-14, the Bison wrestling team had its best season to date as a Division I school. The team reached its highest ranking of 20th in the USA Today polls and finished 21st in the national championship. Steven Monk finished third at the NCAA championships at 165 pounds. Monk was the eighth Bison wrestler to earn All-American status and the second since the school completed its transition to Division I, after Trent Sprenkle, who finished fifth at the 125 pound weight class in 2013. In 2015, Hayden Zillmer (6th at 184) and Kurtis Julson (8th at 174) were the only two WWC athletes to earn All-America honors. After the season, it was announced that NDSU and other WWC schools would merge with the Big 12 Conference.

In 2020, the season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and All-Americans were named without the basis of the NCAA tournament. Three Bison were named All-Americans that year including: Cam Sykora (133), Jared Franek (157), and Andrew Fogarty (165).

In 2022-23, the Bison wrestling team had an all-time great season as a Division I school. NDSU reached its highest ranking ever of 15th in the USA Today polls and finished 18th in the national championship. The Bison brought a total of six wrestlers to the national tournament, which ties a program Division I record (weight, rank): Jared Franek (157, No. 4), Michael Caliendo (165, No. 7), Kellyn March (149, No. 13), Owen Pentz (197, No. 16), DJ Parker (184, No. 29), McGwire Midkiff (133, No. 32). Jared Franek's tournament rank of 4th in his weight class ties a program Division I record set by Steven Monk in 2014. Jared Franek would wind up winning the Elite 90 award for wrestling, and would finish fourth at the tournament, officially naming him an All-American. Michael Caliendo finished seventh in his weight class, also earning the All-American title. [2] The other four Bison wrestlers were eliminated before the blood round. After the season finished, Roger Kish left the program to become the head coach at Oklahoma. [3] Obe Blanc was named as his replacement on May 5, 2023. [4] Blanc rises from associate head coach, the position he had held with the Bison for the past two seasons.

Home meets

Home meets are currently held at the Scheels Center. The new arena was completed in 2016 after a $50 million renovation of the old Bison Sports Arena. The Bison hosted the Division II wrestling tournament three times in the Bison Sports Arena. Prior to that arena opening in 1970, NDSU competed in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse on campus.

Roger Kish is an American wrestler and the current head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners wrestling team. A native of Lapeer, Michigan, Kish was a four-time Michigan state wrestling champion. Kish is currently tied for ninth all time on the Michigan high school single season win record list. He is second all time on the MHSAA career wins compiling a record of 252-2. Kish went on to become only the 11th four-time champion in MHSAA history. His performance in 2003 earned him the Junior Schalles Award for top high school pinner. He next wrestled at the University of Minnesota, compiling a career record of 117-27. As a sophomore and a junior in college, he finished 2nd at the national tournament. After leaving the University of Minnesota, Kish became an assistant wrestling coach at North Dakota State University. He was hired as the head coach at North Dakota State in 2011 and became the youngest NCAA Division I head coach in any sport.

The program's first season was in 1909, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Summit League since the start of the 2008 season. Its home venue is Newman Outdoor Field, located on North Dakota State's campus. Tyler Oakes is the team's head coach in his second season. The program has appeared in 2 NCAA tournaments. It has won 5 conference tournament championships and 2 regular season conference titles. The Bison beat third-seeded South Dakota State in the semifinals and then beat fourth-seeded Western Illinois to win the Summit League championship. In the NCAA tournament the Bison fell to 9th ranked Texas A&M in penalties. This was the program's first NCAA tournament appearance since entering Division I.

The 2023 North Dakota State Bison softball team was an American college softball team that represented North Dakota State University during the 2023 NCAA Division I softball season. The Bison were led by Darren Mueller in his twenty-second season, and played their home games at Tharaldson Park. They competed in the Summit League. The Bison finished the regular season in third place in the conference and claimed the three seed in the 2023 Summit League softball tournament. NDSU beat Kansas City on day 1, but lost to Omaha and South Dakota State on day 2 to be eliminated before the semifinals for the third year in a row.

The 2021 Summit League softball tournament took place from May 12-15, 2022. The top six regular-season finishers of the league's seven teams met in the double-elimination tournament at Tharaldson Park on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.
North Dakota State were the defending champions, since the 2020 season was cancelled midway through due to the COVID-19 pandemic. South Dakota State won the tournament after beating Omaha in the final game. This was the Jacks' first Summit League title, and earned the league's automatic berth to the 2021 NCAA Division I softball tournament.

The 2019 Summit League softball tournament took place from May 8–11, 2019. The top six regular-season finishers of the league's seven teams met in the double-elimination tournament at the Ellig Sports Complex on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.
North Dakota State was the defending champion, and successfully defended their title following their defeat of second-seeded South Dakota in the final round. This was the tenth Summit League title for the Bison, who earned the Summit League's automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Division I softball tournament with the tournament title.

The Bison finished the year with a 5–6–6 overall record and a 1–3–4 conference record good enough to finish just outside the 6-team Summit League tournament field.

North Dakota State made the 2024 Women's National Invitation Tournament as an at-large team, and received a first round bye. They defeated Montana in the second round in their first home postseason game since 2000, which was their first postseason win in the Division I era. The Bison would fall in the WNIT Super 16 to Minnesota.
