The WTA Tour is a worldwide top-tier tennis tour for women organized by the Women's Tennis Association. The second-tier tour is the WTA 125K series, and third-tier is the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour. The men's equivalent is the ATP Tour.
David Nalbandian defeated the defending champion Roger Federer in the final, 1–6, 6–3, 6–3 to win the singles tennis title at the 2007 Madrid Open. Nalbandian achieved the rare feat of defeating the world's top three players in the same tournament, also defeating No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Novak Djokovic en route to the title. He joined Djokovic and Boris Becker in achieving the feat, and became the only player to defeat all of the Big Three in the same tournament.
The Madrid Open is a defunct tennis tournament on the WTA Tour, held between 1996 and 2003. It replaced the International Championships of Spain during these years, before a new tournament was started in Barcelona in 2007. It was a Tier II event in 1996 but was lowered to Tier III from 1997 onwards until it finished in 2003.
