General Patrick Henry Brittan was born in Thornton Gap,Virginia on September 21,1815.
He learned printing in Washington,D.C. and then migrated to Columbus,Georgia in 1839 to practice his trade. He married Ora Williams of Morgan County,Georgia in that same year. They would have nine children together. They moved to LaFayette,Alabama in 1843,where he established the LaFayette Tribune. [1]
He relocated again in 1847 to Montgomery,Alabama,where he bought a half-interest in the Montgomery Advertiser . He maintained his interest in the paper throughout several partnerships. In 1853,the Advertiser became the first newspaper in the state to be published using a steam-powered printing press. He started another newspaper,the Montgomery Messenger,in 1856. It was a small daily that he merged with the Confederation in 1858,in a new joint venture with two other partners. It was in this year that his new home at 507 Columbus Street was completed. [1] The Patrick Henry Brittan House is a historic Italianate style house in Montgomery. Completed in 1858,it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13,1979. [2]
Brittan served as quartermaster general of Alabama from 1857 until 1859. In 1859,he was elected as the 10th Secretary of State of Alabama. He served in this capacity from 1860 until the end of the Civil War. [3]
Brittan and his wife had nine children:Kate,Mary,Henry S.,Emmett,Grattan,Lizzie B.,Lucy,Sallie,and Belle. He died in Montgomery on March 18,1868. [1] Brittan was the uncle of the sculptor,William Randolph Barbee. [4]

The newspaper is a descendant of one founded in 1813,making the Press-Register Alabama's oldest newspaper. Horace King was an African-American architect,engineer,and bridge builder. King is considered the most respected bridge builder of the 19th century Deep South,constructing dozens of bridges in Alabama,Georgia,and Mississippi. King was born into slavery on a South Carolina plantation in 1807. A slave trader sold him to a man who saw something special in Horace King. His owner,John Godwin taught King to read and write as well as how to build at a time when it was illegal to teach slaves. King worked hard and despite bondage,racial prejudice and a multitude of obstacles,King focused his life on working hard and being a genuinely good man. King built bridges,warehouses,homes,churches,and most importantly,he bridged the depths of racism. Ultimately,dignity,respect and freedom were his rewards,as he transcended the color lines inherent in the Old South of the nineteenth century. Horace King became a highly accomplished Master Builder and he emerged from the Civil War as a legislator in the State of Alabama. Affectionately known as Horace “The Bridge Builder”King and the "Prince of Bridge Builders," he also served his community in many important civic capacities."

Washington Court House (OUT) is a city in Union Township,Fayette County,Ohio. It is the county seat of Fayette County and is located between Cincinnati and Columbus. The population grew almost 1.5% from 2010 to 2020 approaching 14,401 people according to the 2020 census results. Joseph Brittan was a New Zealand surgeon,newspaper editor,and provincial councillor,was one of the dominant figures in early Christchurch. Born into a middle-class family in southern England,he followed his younger brother Guise Brittan to Christchurch,where he and his wife arrived in February 1852 with four children. Joseph Brittan soon got involved in the usual activities of early settlers and gained prominence in doing so. He had bought 100 acres on 10 July 1851 and took up 50 of this to the east of Christchurch that he converted to farmland. There,he built the family residence,and the suburb of Linwood was subsequently named after Brittan's farm and homestead of Linwood House.

Thomas McAdory Owen was an American lawyer,archivist,historian,and founder of the Alabama Department of Archives and History,serving as its first director. Through his lobbying efforts Owen was instrumental at obtaining the needed support and state funding for the Alabama Historical Society and other archival and historical institutions in the state.
