Political career
Pohamba is a member of SWAPO. She married Malakias Shiluwa at St Mary's Odibo in 1969,and they have one son,Waldheim Shiluwa (born 1971). In 1976,she left Namibia via Angola and headed to Zambia. After a few months in Zambia,Pohamba was sent to Tanzania for medical training. She also received military training and worked in the camps where the refugees from Namibia were housed. She was then sent to Jamaica for a three-year period to study midwifery. Her husband (Malakias) was killed in a land mine explosion and by that time she had their daughter,Ndelitungapo Shiluwa (born 1973). She was sent back to Angola to practice her medical skills among her own people.
In August 1981,Pohamba was sent to East Germany to study politics at a college designed for Namibians. In 1983,she returned to Angola,where she married future President Hifikepunye Pohamba,and they had three children,Tulongeni (meaning "Let's work") (born 1986),Kaupumhote (meaning "In this world you will not finish the bad people") (born 1988) and Ndapanda (meaning "I'm grateful") (born 1991),who was born shortly after independence.
In her tenure as First Lady,Pohamba advocated for the empowerment of women to enable them to make a meaningful contribution to the development of society and fought for the eradication of violence and other forms of injustice against women. She has also been active in supporting maternal and child health-care,and also in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In July 2006,Penehupifo Pohamba was elected vice-president for the Southern Africa Development Committee (SADC). She is a professional midwife after being trained in Tanzania and Jamaica. Before her husband became president,she practised as a midwife and registered nurse. She is also the patron of the Lady Pohamba Private Hospital (LPPH). [2]
On Heroes' Day 2014 she was conferred the Most Brilliant Order of the Sun,First Class. [3]

Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma, is a Namibian revolutionary, anti-apartheid activist and politician who served three terms as the first President of Namibia, from 1990 to 2005. Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. Prior to 1960, SWAPO was known as the Ovambo People's Organisation (OPO). He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia's political independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe, beginning after the United Nations withdrew the mandate for South Africa to govern the territory. Nujoma led SWAPO during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence, which lasted from 1966 to 1989.
Hidipo Livius Hamutenya was a Namibian politician. A long time leading member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Hamutenya was a member of the Cabinet of Namibia from independence in 1990 to 2004, serving in several important ministerial portfolios. He was defeated in a bid for the party's presidential nomination in 2004 and left SWAPO to form an opposition group, the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP), in 2007. He was elected to the National Assembly of Namibia with RDP in the 2009 general election. He was forced to step down as RDP president on 28 February 2015 and rejoined SWAPO on 28 August 2015.
Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba is a Namibian politician who served as the second president of Namibia from 21 March 2005 to 21 March 2015. He won the 2004 presidential election overwhelmingly as the candidate of SWAPO, and was reelected in 2009. Pohamba was the president of SWAPO from 2007 until his retirement in 2015. He is a recipient of the Ibrahim Prize.
Pendukeni "Penny" Iivula-Ithana is a Namibian politician who served as the secretary general of SWAPO, Namibia's ruling party, from 2007 to 2012. She was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia in 1989 and has been a member of Parliament and member of cabinet since independence in 1990.
John Alphons Pandeni was a Namibian politician and trade unionist. A member of SWAPO, Pandeni was Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development at the time of his death in 2008.
Erkki Nghimtina is a Namibian politician and former military officer in the Namibia Defence Force (NDF). A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), Nghimtina served as member of the National Assembly of Namibia from 1995 to 2020. He served in various cabinet roles from 2005 to 2020.

Ida Maria Magdalena Hoffmann is a Namibian politician. She served as a member of the 6th National Assembly from 2015 to 2020. Prior to that, from 2005 to 2010 she was selected by president Hifikepunye Pohamba as a non-voting member of the 4th National Assembly of Namibia. Hoffman was active in SWAPO in the 1980s. She founded the Children's World Creche in Katutura in 1984 and has been involved in the Roman Catholic Church since 1962. In 1990, Hoffman studied project development at the Pan African Institute for Development in Zambia. She has also served as chairperson of the Nama Genocide Technical Committee in Windhoek.
Erastus Amutenya Uutoni is a Namibian SWAPO politician who has served in the cabinet of Namibia since March 2010.
Monica Nashandi is a Namibian diplomat and politician. Nashandi was Namibia's ambassador to Scandinavian countries as well as the former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Nashandi was removed from the SWAPO list for the 2009 general election because she had not registered to vote, a requirement under Namibian law. Nashandi was Namibia's ambassador to the United States of America from 2019 to 2020.
Hadino Timothy Hishongwa was a Namibian politician, diplomat, parliamentarian, and a founding member of SWAPO.
Laura Veendapi McLeod-Katjirua is a Namibian politician who has been Governor of the Khomas Region since 2012 and Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO since 2012. Previously she was Governor of Omaheke Region from 2001 to 2012. She was transferred to Khomas Region by President Hifikepunye Pohamba after she was elected as Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO on December 2, 2012.
Onamunhama is a village in the Ohangwena Region in the north of Namibia in the Oukwanyama tribal area. It is the location of the former Anglican mission station of Holy Cross. The mission station was founded in 1927 ca. 20 kilometres east of the St. Mary Mission in Odibo, right on the Angolan border.
Mukwanangombe Auguste Mukwahepo Immanuel affectionately known as Meekulu Mukwahepo, was a Namibian guerrilla, notable for being the first woman recruit of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia. Mukwahepo committed her life looking after children during the South African Border War, moving from one camp to another whenever the need arose.
Olivia Martha Imalwa is the Prosecutor General of Namibia since 2004.
Agnes Basilia Tjongarero is a Namibian politician.
Juliet Kavetuna is a Namibian politician and a legislator serving since 2008 in National Assembly. She is a former deputy minister of Health and Social Services, a former minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture and a former secretary general of the National Youth Council of Namibia
Godfrey ǀKhaesen Gaoseb was a Namibian economist and civil servant. He served as the first permanent secretary in the Namibian Ministry of Finance after the independence of Namibia, an executive director of the World Bank, and as the Special Advisor on Economics to presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba.
