Peter Clark Erskine (born June 5, 1954) [1] is an American jazz drummer who was a member of the jazz fusion groups Weather Report and Steps Ahead.
Erskine was born in Somers Point, New Jersey, U.S. [2] He began playing the drums at the age of four. [1] He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy [3] in Michigan, then studied percussion at Indiana University.
His professional music career started in 1972 when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. [3] After four years with Kenton, he joined Maynard Ferguson for two years. [1] In 1978, he joined Weather Report, [3] [4] joining Jaco Pastorius in the rhythm section. After four years and five albums with Weather Report and the Jaco Pastorius big band's Word of Mouth , he joined Steps Ahead. [1]
In 1983, he performed on the Antilles Records release Swingrass '83 . [5] He toured the US in 1992 with Chick Corea. [4]
Erskine splits his time as a musician and a professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
He was featured on Kate Bush's 2005 album Aerial , where Erskine teamed with bass player Eberhard Weber. Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, Queen Latifah and Linda Ronstadt, as well as Scottish and Finnish classical orchestras, have had Erskine perform as a featured musician.
In 2011, he appeared on stage at the Royal Opera House, London in the new opera Anna Nicole . [6]
In 1992, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. [7]
Erskine is married to Mutsuko Erskine. The two have two children, actress and writer Maya Erskine, [8] and film editor and producer Taichi Erskine. [9]

Weather Report was an American jazz fusion band active from 1970 to 1986. The band was founded in 1970 by Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš, American drummer Alphonse Mouzon as well as American percussionists Don Alias and Barbara Burton. The band was initially co-led by co-frontmen Zawinul and Shorter but, subsequently as the 1970s progressed, Zawinul largely became the sole musical leader of the group. Other prominent members at various points in the band's lifespan included Jaco Pastorius, Alphonso Johnson, Victor Bailey, Chester Thompson, Peter Erskine, Airto Moreira, and Alex Acuña. Throughout most of its existence, the band was a quintet consisting of Zawinul, Shorter, a bass guitarist, a drummer, and a percussionist.
John Scofield is an American guitarist and composer whose music over a long career has blended jazz, jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul and rock. He first came to mainstream attention in the band of Miles Davis, and has toured and recorded with many prominent jazz artists, including saxophonists Eddie Harris, Dave Liebman, Joe Henderson and Joe Lovano; keyboardists George Duke, Joey DeFrancesco, Herbie Hancock, Larry Goldings and Robert Glasper; fellow guitarists Pat Metheny, John Abercrombie, Pat Martino and Bill Frisell; bassists Marc Johnson and Jaco Pastorius; and drummers Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers. Outside the world of jazz, he has collaborated with Phil Lesh, Mavis Staples, John Mayer, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Gov't Mule.

Michael Leonard Brecker was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He was awarded 15 Grammy Awards as a performer and composer, received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2004, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2007.

Alan Pasqua is an American rock and jazz pianist. He studied at Indiana University and the New England Conservatory of Music. His album Standards with drummer Peter Erskine was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008. As a session musician, he has toured and recorded with Bob Dylan, Santana, Cher, Michael Bublé, Eddie Money, Allan Holdsworth, Joe Walsh, Pat Benatar, Rick Springfield, and John Fogerty. He co-composed the original CBS Evening News theme. He has also had an extensive career in pop and rock music, most notably as a founding member, keyboardist, and songwriter of the 1980s hard rock band Giant.
Scorched is the live recorded premiere of the (re-)composition by Mark-Anthony Turnage commissioned by the Society of Friends and Patrons of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2002. Turnage recomposed and orchestrated original compositions by jazz guitarist John Scofield for symphony orchestra and big band to which the title refers. Scofield was part of the project together with John Patitucci on electric bass and Peter Erskine on drums. In 2004, it was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Classical Crossover Album".

The Hudson Project is a live album by guitarist John Abercrombie, drummer Peter Erskine, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and bassist John Patitucci, recorded at the Manhattan Center, New York City on October 17, 1998 and released in 2000 by the Stretch label. Each musician contributed two compositions to the recording. The performance came about when the D'Addario Company hired the four players to present a series of clinics and concerts, and the group adopted the name Hudson Project.
Last year, [Peter Erskine], along with bassist John Patitucci, traveled through the United States for a month with a threesome led by pianist Chick Corea. The Somers Point, N. J., native also worked in Italy and Spain as part of pianist Joey Calderazzo's trio, then recorded on the latter's upcoming Blue Note release.
