Company background
As part of the Petrochemical Division of the Malaysian oil giant Petronas, PCF(K)SB's primary product is granular urea, with ammonia and methanol as secondary by-products of the manufacturing process. Currently, the plant has a rated urea output of 2100 MT per day. PCF(K)SB's urea product is also used in the manufacturing process of additional derivative petrochemicals such as plastics, glue, synthetic fibre, synthetic rubber and lubricants.
Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn, palm fruit or sugar cane.
Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound with chemical formula CO(NH2)2. This amide has two –NH2 groups joined by a carbonyl (C=O) functional group.
Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. The simplest pnictogen hydride, ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. It is a common nitrogenous waste, particularly among aquatic organisms, and it contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to food and fertilizers. Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceutical products and is used in many commercial cleaning products. It is mainly collected by downward displacement of both air and water. Ammonia is named for the Ammonians, worshipers of the Egyptian god Amun, who used ammonium chloride in their rituals.
Most of PCF(K)SB's products are marketed by MITCO Sdn Bhd, [1] the marketing arm for petrochemicals in Petronas, and is exported through a deep wharf export terminal located in Butterworth, Penang which is connected to the main production plant by railway.
Butterworth, within the North Seberang Perai District, is the largest town in Seberang Perai, the mainland half of the Malaysian state of Penang. It lies approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) east of George Town, the capital city of Penang, across the Penang Strait. As of 2010, Butterworth contained a total of 71,643 residents.
