Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency is one of the five Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. Baramulla has 11.5 lakh voters.

The Jammu and Kashmir Awami League is a political party in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The party was founded by members of different counter-insurgent groups in November 1995. It supports article 370 of the Indian constitution, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. It is located on the banks of Nallah Hamal running parallel to the Baramulla-Rafiabad-Kupwara National Highway NH-701. Watergam Rafiabad is the first and only town in Rafiabad constituency also having status of Constituency Headquarter of Rafiabad Assembly segment.It has been brought into the ambit of Urban area in the year 2006-07 by the untired efforts of Welfare Committee Watergam.

The first elections for the Legislative Assembly of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir under its own Constitution were held in March–June 1957. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was appointed Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mohammad Dilawar Mir is a well known Indian politician and member of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Mir was a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from the Rafiabad constituency in Baramulla district. His son Yawar Mir took over the same in 2014 becoming the youngest MLA in J&K. Dilawar Mir left Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party in February 2020 to form Apni party.

Abdul Rashid Dar was a politician and lawyer from the state of Jammu & Kashmir, who served as the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council. Throughout his career Dar held several senior positions in the government. The Secretary General of Rajya Sabha R.C Tripathi in his book "Bicameralism Today" defines Dar as the lawyer with a shining career.". Dar started his career with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference when he won the election from Shangus Anantnag and became an MLA. Dar holds distinction for being the only chairman two have won two consecutive terms. He also remains the longest serving chairman of Jammu and Kashmir.
