Raphael W. Bostic (born June 5,1966) is an American economist,academic,and public servant who has served as the 15th president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta since 2017. [1] [2] During his academic career,Bostic served as chair of the Department of Governance,Management,and the Policy Process at the Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. [3]
Bostic was born to Rafael Theodore Bostic of St. Croix [4] and Viola Williams in New York City and grew up in Delran Township,New Jersey,where he was valedictorian of Delran High School. [5] He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Harvard University in 1987 with a combined major in economics and psychology. In 1995,he earned his doctorate in economics from Stanford University. [6]
Bostic served as a board member of Freddie Mac,the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and Abode Communities. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration,vice president of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management,a member of the board of trustees of Enterprise Community Partners,and a research advisory board member of the Reinvestment Fund.
Bostic was an economist for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 1995 to 2001,and the assistant secretary for policy development and research at United States Department of Housing and Urban Development from 2009 to 2012. He was the Chair of the Department on Governance,Management and the Policy Process at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California from 2012 to 2017.
In 2020,Bostic wrote an essay for the FRB Atlanta entitled,"A Moral and Economic Imperative to End Racism." [7] In it he wrote that systematic racism drags on the economy. [8]
On October 14,2022,Bostic failed to disclose stock trading transactions in the five years leading the bank that were revealed after a federal investigation. Bostic stated a 3rd party manager had made the transactions,unknowingly to him. [9] Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has asked the Office of Inspector General for the Federal Reserve Board to initiate an independent review of President Bostic's financial disclosures.
Throughout his career,Bostic has been mentioned as a potential nominee for a variety of roles in the federal government. In November 2020,Bostic was named as a potential candidate for Secretary of the Treasury in the then-upcoming Biden administration,a position that ultimately went to Janet Yellen. [10]
In August 2021,Bostic was mentioned as a contender for the position of Comptroller of the Currency. He has recently been mentioned as a possible replacement for Jerome Powell as Chair of the Federal Reserve,before he was re-nominated for a second four-year term. [11]
Bostic is the first African-American and first openly gay [12] person selected to lead a regional Federal Reserve bank. [13]

It was created on December 23,1913,with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act,after a series of financial panics led to the desire for central control of the monetary system in order to alleviate financial crises. Over the years,events such as the Great Depression in the 1930s and the Great Recession during the 2000s have led to the expansion of the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve System.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is a committee within the Federal Reserve System that is charged under United States law with overseeing the nation's open market operations. This Federal Reserve committee makes key decisions about interest rates and the growth of the United States money supply. Under the terms of the original Federal Reserve Act,each of the Federal Reserve banks was authorized to buy and sell in the open market bonds and short term obligations of the United States Government,bank acceptances,cable transfers,and bills of exchange. Janet Louise Yellen is an American economist serving as the 78th United States secretary of the treasury since January 26,2021. She previously served as the 15th chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018. She is the first person to hold those positions having also led the White House Council of Economic Advisers and the first woman to hold either post.
Stanley Fischer is an Israeli-American economist who served as the 20th Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2017. Fischer previously served as the 8th Governor of the Bank of Israel from 2005 to 2013. Born in Northern Rhodesia,he holds dual citizenship in Israel and the United States. He previously served as First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and as Chief Economist of the World Bank. On January 10,2014,President Barack Obama nominated Fischer to the position of Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve. He is a senior advisor at BlackRock. On September 6,2017,Stanley Fischer announced that he was resigning as Vice-Chair for personal reasons effective October 13,2017,two days before his 74th birthday.
Ben Shalom Bernanke is an American economist who served as the 14th chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014. After leaving the Federal Reserve,he was appointed a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution. During his tenure as chairman,Bernanke oversaw the Federal Reserve's response to the late-2000s financial crisis,for which he was named the 2009 Time Person of the Year. Before becoming Federal Reserve chairman,Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University and chaired the Department of Economics there from 1996 to September 2002,when he went on public service leave. Bernanke was awarded the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences,jointly with Douglas Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig,"for research on banks and financial crises",more specifically for his analysis of the Great Depression.

Sarah Bloom Raskin is an American attorney and financial markets policymaker who served as the 13th United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury from 2014 to 2017.
