Rugby union in Saudi Arabia is a minor but growing sport, which has been played for several decades in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Many of the local rugby union teams date back to the late 1970s. [1]

Governing body

Rugby is a developing sport in the kingdom. The current Saudi Arabian Rugby Federation is licensed by the Saudi government and is a member of Asia Rugby. Its president is Ali Al Dajani, and the CEO is Amal Al Grafi.[ citation needed ]

History

Due to the climate, Saudi rugby has been frequently played in extreme temperatures, with high temperatures or even on sand. Games are usually held in the evening for this reason.

Rugby union was introduced into Saudi Arabia by the British in the mid-twentieth century. Due to the influx of western workers, rugby has experienced a form of revival and for a while had a significant number of Saudi nationals playing.

Saudi Arabia participated in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. On 29 April 2016 Saudi Arabia played against Jordan in their first World Rugby recognized international game.

Saudi Rugby Federation has no recognized clubs in the kingdom, however there are currently 6 teams in Saudi Arabia:

In November 2012, a national team consisting only of Saudi nationals entered the West Asia 7's competition in Dubai. They finished 3rd overall with Lebanon taking the title. [1]

Rugby union was first introduced into Lebanon both by the mandated French forces, and subsequently by the Lebanese returning from the diaspora. Introduced into many other parts of the Middle East, by the British military in the mid 20th Century, rugby has begun to develop across the Arabian peninsula with the establishment of many national rugby federations and the development of the Dubai Sevens, which has helped generate interest in the sport in Arabic-speaking nations.

The Lebanese Rugby Union Federation, a national sports association based in Beirut, is the governing body for rugby union in Lebanon. The origins of the game in the country date back to at least 1995 with the formation of the Beirut Phoenicians club, but it was not until 2005 that the Lebanese Ministry of Sport officially recognized it as a sport. Lebanon became an associate member of the now-defunct Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union in 2007, before joining the ARFU as an associate member in December 2009. It attained full membership in Asia by 2013, and associate status with World Rugby in 2018.
