San Joaquin College of Law (SJCL) is a private law school in Clovis, California.

History

SJCL was founded in Fresno in 1969 by Fresno County Municipal Court Judge Dan Eymann, U.S. District Court Judge Oliver Wanger, and attorney John Loomis. [1] [2] The school began instruction in 1970 on the campus of Fresno Pacific College (now Fresno Pacific University). It remained there until 1980, when the campus moved to Shields Avenue.

In 1996, SJCL relocated to the original Clovis High School building. The structure was built in 1920. [3] The renovation, including a new courtroom, lecture hall, and enlarged library, allowed the Law School to expand, while still maintaining the historic character of the building. [4]

Accreditation

SJCL is approved by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California. [5] It is not accredited by the American Bar Association. As a result, SJCL graduates may not qualify to take the bar or practice outside of California. [6]

Bar pass rate

For the July, 2023 California bar exam, the school's pass rate for first-time takers was 32% vs. the statewide average of 65%. Among the twenty-three California law schools with thirty or more first-time takers, SJCL ranked twenty-first. [7]

In order to evaluate the "qualitative soundness of a law school's program of legal education," the State Bar of California requires all California-Accredited Law schools to provide cumulative bar passage rates for the previous five years. For 2018-2022, SJCL's cumulative five-year bar pass rate was 76.3%. [8]

San Joaquin Agricultural Law Review

The San Joaquin Agricultural Law Review has been published by SJCL students since 1990, making it the oldest of the three law reviews in the United States focusing on agriculture law. [9] [10] [11] [12]

The New American Legal Clinic (NALC) is a non-profit immigration law clinic that operates out of San Joaquin College of Law. [13] There is both a classroom and practical component to the clinical course which is offered every fall, spring and summer session. There is a director and legal director as well as clinical staff that instruct and assist the students in completing and filing cases with the Department of Homeland Security/USCIS as well as the immigration courts. [14] Cases are handled by students and supervised by professors. The NALC Clinic is also recognized as a source of information for media, practitioners, immigrants’ rights groups and collaboratives and agricultural and other industry employers in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. [15]

Family Law Mediation Clinic

Students and faculty of San Joaquin College of Law provide alternative dispute resolution services in a free family law mediation clinic. [16] They meet with husband and wife in the mediation setting to help them negotiate a legal agreement while avoiding the time and expense of going to court. In their role as mediators, they do not represent either party, nor do they represent the parties jointly.

The railroad bought the land from two farmers and named the station after one of them, Clovis Cole. Pollasky then developed a town on the site, also named Clovis.

Thomas Jefferson School of Law (TJSL) is a private law school in San Diego, California. It offers a Juris Doctor and three Master of Laws programs, including one that is exclusively online, as well as a combined J.D./M.B.A. with San Diego State University.

John F. Kennedy University was a private university based in California with offices in San Jose, California. The university was founded in 1965 to offer degrees and certificates for non-traditional higher education students, taught mostly by adjunct faculty. In April 2009, the university became an affiliate of the National University System initially as an independent university. The institution closed in 2020 with programs transferred to other National University schools.

He also served as the 79th President to the State Bar of California. He owns and practices law at the Law Offices of Anthony P. Capozzi and serves on the California Commission on Judicial Performance, a post California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to in 2010. Since 2005, Capozzi has been the exclusive legal and political consultant for KFSN-TV ABC 30.

Andreas Borgeas is an American attorney, politician, and academic who served as a member of the California State Senate from the 8th district, which included parts of the Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada. Prior to being elected to the state Senate, he was a member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors. He represented all or portions of Amador, Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Sacramento, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Tuolumne counties.
