Seamark Group is a multinational food processing conglomerate wholesale company with offices in Manchester, Chittagong, New Jersey and Brooklyn. The company was founded in 1976 and established in 1991 by Iqbal, Bilal and Kamal Ahmed.

History

Seamark was the first company to introduce black tiger shrimps to Europe [1] in 1976. [2] It was founded by brothers; Iqbal, Bilal and Kamal Ahmed. [3] Seamark plc was established in 1991, specialising in the processing and stocking of warm water shrimps, especially the black tiger and the fresh water king prawn. After processing and packing, these were exported to most countries in Europe. [4]

Since 1992, Seamark has invested more than £30m in infrastructure and production around the world. [3] In November 2000, they opened a £10 million seafood processing plant at the Bangladesh port of Chittagong. In 2001, they opened a U.S sales office in New Jersey and have since acquired a warehouse and a cold store in Brooklyn, New York to distribute products in North America, including Canada. [4] In 2006, the company spent £12m on new headquarters [5] on a 6.25- acre site in East Manchester [4] when Seamark offshoot, IBCO Food Industries opened. [6] In November 2007, this site was further developed when a Thai restaurant called Vermilion was opened. [4]

Seamark has more than 1,000 products of seafood, poultry, fruit, vegetables, [6] and finger foods. [7] Its offices in New York and Bangladesh imports, processes and distributes frozen seafood and poultry. [1] Its operation in Chittagong, Bangladesh processes products ranging from its traditional shrimps to poultry, dry foods, finger foods, frozen fruit and vegetables, and supplies it to the catering trade. [6]

Its business runs a production facility with its own shrimp processing line and hatchery in Chittagong, [7] a deep-sea fishing fleet in the Bay of Bengal, a purpose-built processing plant and head office in Manchester, and a distribution operation in New York. [5]

Operations

Seamark is a £161m-plus worldwide operation [3] with an annual turnover of $250m, and a global workforce of 4,500 people, [5] including 300 at its operations in east Manchester. [3] [8] The production facilities in Bangladesh created 1,000 jobs for the local community. [7]

Seamark has a customer base of retailers, wholesalers and distributors throughout the world, with key markets in Germany and the Benelux countries. [7] The Seamark Group of companies has a group turnover of $400m, is the UK's leading importer and processor of shrimps, and has a range of products used by chefs and found in supermarkets across the world. [5]

Its exports account for more than 69% of sales and around 50% of all shrimps exported from Britain come from Seamark's processing operations. [3] The company's international sales have grown by 22% a year, from £32.6m in 2009 to £48.9m in 2011. [7]

Awards and recognition

In 1998, Seamark was awarded the Queen's Awards for Enterprise for International Trade. In July 1999, it was awarded the Barclays Business in Europe export award. [4] [9]

In Bangladesh, the company received a national award and gold medal from the Bangladesh Government consecutively for the years 2001, 2002, and 2003, for the highest export of seafood. [4]

In 2012, Seamark was ranked 191 in The Sunday Times HSBC International Track top 200 performing private companies in the UK. [7] In February 2016, it was awarded the Outstanding Business of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards. [10]

Their success turned him into one of the United Kingdom's richest men. He is also the highest ranked British Bangladeshi to be featured on the Sunday Times Rich List.

Many others also own supermarket stores specialising in Bangladeshi products, and also in the media, the main Bengali channels - Bangla TV and Channel S.

The city of Chattogram (Chittagong) is traditionally centred around its seaport which has existed since the 4th century BCE. One of the world's oldest ports with a functional natural harbor for centuries, Chittagong appeared on ancient Greek and Roman maps, including on Ptolemy's world map. Chittagong port is the oldest and largest natural seaport and the busiest port of Bay of Bengal. It was located on the southern branch of the Silk Road. The city was home to the ancient independent Buddhist kingdoms of Bengal like Samatata and Harikela. It later fell under of the rule of the Gupta Empire, the Gauda Kingdom, the Pala Empire, the Sena Dynasty, the Deva Dynasty and the Arakanese kingdom of Waithali. Arab Muslims traded with the port from as early as the 9th century. Historian Lama Taranath is of the view that the Buddhist king Gopichandra had his capital at Chittagong in the 10th century. According to Tibetan tradition, this century marked the birth of Tantric Buddhism in the region. The region has been explored by numerous historic travellers, most notably Ibn Battuta of Morocco who visited in the 14th century. During this time, the region was conquered and incorporated into the independent Sonargaon Sultanate by Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah in 1340 AD. Sultan Ghiyasuddin Azam Shah constructed a highway from Chittagong to Chandpur and ordered the construction of many lavish mosques and tombs. After the defeat of the Sultan of Bengal Ghiyasuddin Mahmud Shah in the hands of Sher Shah Suri in 1538, the Arakanese Kingdom of Mrauk U managed to regain Chittagong. From this time onward, until its conquest by the Mughal Empire, the region was under the control of the Portuguese and the Magh pirates for 128 years.

In 2015 he is a member of the executive committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh, and a director of the Chittagong Stock Exchange.
