Sheil Shukla is an American board-certified internal medicine specialist. He is also a recipe developer, food photographer, and cookbook author, who explores the use of plant-based nutrition as preventative clinical medicine. His first cookbook, Plant-Based India, was nominated for the 2023 James Beard Foundation Award.

Early life and education

Shukla was born "just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin," [1] to parents who had immigrated from Gujarat, India in the 1970s. [1] He graduated from Brookfield Academy in 2011. [2]

He grew up eating Gujatarti vegetarian dishes, and during college (where he studied molecular biology and the fine arts), he taught himself to cook, drawing upon dishes from his childhood. He also became interested in nutrition, and after becoming vegan in 2015, [1] he eventually "embraced plant based nutrition beyond veganism." [1] [3] He started an Instagram account and blog called "plantbasedartist," and became a recipe developer and food photographer. [4] Shukla received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019. [5] [6] He also earned a certificate in plant-based nutrition from Cornell University (online). [1]

Career

Shukla is currently an internal medicine specialist with Northwestern University's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. [5] [6] The New York Times listed his first cookbook, Plant-Based India (2022), as one of the Best Cookbooks of 2022, [7] and the Food Network listed it as one of the “10 Best New Vegan Cookbooks” for 2023. [8] VegNews listed Plant-Based India as one of the "Top 100 Vegan Cookbooks of All Time" in 2024. [9]

It was also won the IVFF award in 2022, [10] and was nominated for the 2023 James Beard Foundation Award - Vegetable Focused Cooking. [11]

<i>Ten Talents</i> (cookbook) Vegan cookbook, first published 1968

Ten Talents is a vegetarian and vegan cookbook originally published in 1968 by Rosalie Hurd and Frank J. Hurd. At the time, it was one of the few resources for vegetarian and vegan cooks. The cookbook promotes Christian vegetarianism and a Bible-based diet, in keeping with teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. By 1991, the 750-recipe cookbook was entering its 44th printing and had sold more than 250,000 copies. An expanded edition with more than 1,000 recipes was issued in 2012.

BOSH! is a duo of British vegan chefs from Sheffield consisting of Henry Firth and Ian Theasby. They rose to fame in 2016 with the launch of their YouTube channel, and have gone on to host the ITV1 television programme Living on the Veg and author a number of books. Their eponymous vegan cookbook ranked fifth in the Sunday Times Bestsellers chart in 2018, and is among the top 50 best-selling UK cookbooks of all time.

Joanne Lee Molinaro is an American attorney, and Vegan/Plant-based author and blogger. Her cookbook, The Korean Vegan Cookbook: Reflections and Recipes from Omma's Kitchen, won the 2022 James Beard Foundation Award.

William John Bulsiewicz better known as Dr. B., is an American board-certified gastroenterologist and author known for his exploration of the relationship between the gut microbiome and plant-based nutrition.

Vegetable Kingdom: The Abundant World of Vegan Recipes, often shortened to Vegetable Kingdom, is a 2020 cookbook by Bryant Terry. It received positive reviews and won an NAACP Image Award. Recipes are based on the cuisines of the African diaspora. The book provides a song pairing for each dish.
