Hans Georg Conon von der Gabelentz was a German general linguist and sinologist. His Chinesische Grammatik (1881),according to a critic,"remains until today recognized as probably the finest overall grammatical survey of the Classical Chinese language to date."
The Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies (HJAS) is an English-language scholarly journal published by the Harvard-Yenching Institute. Edward Hetzel Schafer was an American historian,sinologist,and writer noted for his expertise on the Tang dynasty,and was a professor of Chinese at University of California,Berkeley,for 35 years. Schafer's most notable works include The Golden Peaches of Samarkand and The Vermilion Bird,which both explore China's interactions with other cultures and regions during the Tang dynasty.
Oriental studies is the academic field that studies Near Eastern and Far Eastern societies and cultures,languages,peoples,history and archaeology. In recent years,the subject has often been turned into the newer terms of Middle Eastern studies and Asian studies. Traditional Oriental studies in Europe is today generally focused on the discipline of Islamic studies;the study of China,especially traditional China,is often called Sinology. The study of East Asia in general,especially in the United States,is often called East Asian studies.

Chinese as a foreign or second language is when non-native speakers study Chinese varieties. The increased interest in China from those outside has led to a corresponding interest in the study of Standard Chinese as a foreign language,the official language of mainland China,Taiwan and Singapore. However,the teaching of Chinese both within and outside China is not a recent phenomenon. Westerners began learning different Chinese varieties in the 16th century. Within China,Mandarin became the official language in the early 20th century. Mandarin also became the official language of Taiwan when the Kuomintang took over control from Japan after World War II.
Émmanuel-Édouard Chavannes was a French sinologist and expert on Chinese history and religion,and is best known for his translations of major segments of Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian,the work's first ever translation into a Western language.
Emil Bretschneider was a sinologist of Baltic German ethnicity and a correspondent member of the Académie française. He operated in the Russian Empire. He graduated from the medical school of University of Dorpat in Dorpat Estonia,and was first posted as a physician by the Russian legation to Tehran (1862–65). From 1866 to 1883 he was posted as physician by the Russian legation to Pekin.
Erik Zürcher was a Dutch Sinologist. From 1962 to 1993,Zürcher was a professor of history of East Asia at the Leiden University. He was also Director of the Sinological Institute,between 1975 and 1990. His Chinese name was XǔLǐhe (许理和).
George Alexander Kennedy,was an American sinologist known for his studies of classical Chinese and for his teaching of Chinese to students.
Stephen Owen is an American sinologist specializing in Chinese literature,particularly Tang dynasty poetry and comparative poetics. Fang Chao-ying 房兆楹was a China-born American Sinologist,bibliographer,and historian of China best known for the contributions he and his wife,Tu Lien-che made to the biographical dictionaries Eminent Chinese of the Ch'ing Period (1943) and Ming Biographical Dictionary (1976). He spent his professional career primarily at libraries and universities in the United States.
