The Soundcity MVP Awards Festival ("TheMVPs" or "MVP") is an event presented by Soundcity TV which awards plaques to musicians and performers across Africa. Since 2007, the winners are chosen by the viewers and fans by visiting #TheMVPs' website [1] and a select committee of the industry stakeholder. The first MVPs ceremony was held in December 2016 in Lagos, Nigeria. [2]

The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on Soundcity TV on DStv, GOtv, TalkTalk UK, Soundcity Radio Network and Soundcity Android and iOS app as well as online on the SoundcityTV website, YouTube and other social media accounts.

The maiden ceremony (2016)

The MVPs award ceremony was announced by Soundcity TV when teaser radio and TV promo began to run in the first week of November on Soundcity Radio Network and Soundcity TV tagged 'Soundcity MVP Awards Festival' and announced as 'crowning the hardest working talents in Africa'. The maiden ceremony is to take place at the Expo Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites Lagos, Nigeria on the 29th of December, 2016 and hosted by comedian Basketmouth. [3] Nominated artistes range from Wizkid with eight nominations including African artiste of the year, Davido, South Africa's Emtee, Nasty C, Mafikizolo to Ghana's Mz Vee, Sarkodie and Tanzania's Diamond Platnumz and Vanessa Mdee. The event would be broadcast live across Africa via cable TV, Soundcity Mobile App, Facebook and YouTube. [4]

Soundcity TV is a 24-hour Nigerian lifestyle and music channel based in Lagos from Consolidated Media Associates Limited. Soundcity TV describes itself as a "pan-African urban music TV channel."

"Azonto" is a song by Nigerian singer Wizkid. It was produced by the record producing and songwriting duo Legendury Beatz. The song was officially released on January 28, 2012. It helped popularize Azonto, a Ghanaian music genre and dance. It peaked at number 19 on the Afribiz Top 100 chart. Wizkid performed the song at Chris Brown's concert, which occurred at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. Chris Brown also talked about the dance on 106 & Park and credited Wizkid for teaching him.

Sexy Mama 2013 single by Iyanya

"Sexy Mama" is a song recorded by Nigerian recording artist Iyanya featuring Nigerian singer Wizkid for the former's second studio album, Desire (2013). It was issued to digital retailers as the album's fifth single on 6 February 2013, coinciding with the release of the parent album, through his label Made Men Music Group. Written by both of the two musicians, "Sexy Mama" was solely produced by D'Tunes. It is a dancehall and dance-inspired track that contains lyrics pertaining to a man's interest in a girl he met at a club.

Oyenike Laoye, professionally known as Nikki Laoye, is a Nigerian recording artist, singer, humanitarian, songwriter, dancer and occasional actress, renowned for her eclectic musical expressions and captivating stage performances. As a recording artist, Laoye's music has earned her several awards including The Headies Award in 2013 for Best Female Vocal Performance and the All African Music Awards (AFRIMA) in 2014 for Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music. She is also well known for the 2006 hit song Never felt this Way before, the 2013 dance single "1-2-3", the soulful ballad "Only You", which she remixed in 2016 featuring Seyi Shay and the love song Onyeuwaoma featuring Banky W.

The Headies Award

The Headies is a music awards show established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry. The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is broadcast live on HipTV to television viewers across Nigeria. The 1st and 2nd editions of The Headies were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos State. Between 2010 and 2012, the awards were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Several media personalities in Nigeria have hosted the annual ceremony, including Darey Art Alade, D'banj, Dakore Egbuson, Banky W., Rita Dominic, M.I, Tiwa Savage and Dr SID.

The Headies Award for Artiste of the Year is an award presented at The Headies, a ceremony that was established in 2006 and originally called the Hip Hop World Awards. It was first presented to P-Square in 2006.

Toke Makinwa is a Nigerian radio personality, television host, vlogger, lifestyle entrepreneur and author. She is known for hosting The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM and for her YouTube vlog series Toke Moments. She released her book On Becoming in November 2016.

DJ Spinall Nigerian disc jockey

Sodamola Oluseye Desmond, professionally known as DJ Spinall, is a Nigerian Disc Jockey, Record Producer, Songwriter, Label Executive, and Media personality. He first gained prominence in 2004, while working as a radio DJ at Raypower 100.5 FM. He later joined Industry Nite where he promoted underground talents at the weekly platform. He was the official DJ to Wande Coal while he was affiliated with Mavin Records. DJ Spinall created a style edge to his outfit known as TheCAP, tracing his roots back to his culture. TheCAP, which fans tags as “TheCrazyAzzParty” has since then been his brand power and identity.

Ycee Nigerian rapper

Oludemilade Martin Alejo, known professionally as Ycee, is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to limelight after his single "Condo", which features vocals from Patoranking, earned him two nominations at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. He was also nominated for Best Artist in African Pop at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards. In October 2016, Ycee signed a record deal with Sony Music, but terminated his contract with the label in February 2018. In December 2016, he was nominated for Next Rated at The Headies 2016.

Falz Nigerian rapper

Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called "The School Boys" with his friend before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009. Falz became more well-known after his song "Marry Me" featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade.

"Caro" is an afropop song collaboratively recorded by Nigerian recording artists L.A.X and Wizkid. Released as the first official recording by Starboy Entertainment, the song was added as a bonus on Wizkid's album Ayo.

Niniola Nigerian singer-songwriter

Niniola Apata ,Professionally known as Niniola, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She participated in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013. After releasing her debut single "Ibadi", she was nominated for Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

Rachel Akosua Funmilola Garton, professionally known as Lola Rae, is a Nigerian-born singer and dancer of Ghanaian and British descent. She gained recognition following the release of her debut single "Watch My Ting Go", which received critical acclaim and thus earned her a nomination for Most Promising Female Act to Watch at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

Jephthah Bowoto, popularly known and referred to as Akpororo, is a Nigerian stand-up comedian, vocalist and actor.

Do2tun

Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode is a Nigerian on-air personality, video jockey, actor and media entrepreneur, popularly known as Do2dTun. After pioneering a dance group called Xtreme dancers while in the University and featuring in music videos like D’banj's Why Me and Same Ni by Dj Zeez, Dotun came to wider prominence as a TV and radio personality, hosting shows and concerts.

Temi Dollface Nigerian singer

Temi DollFace is a Nigerian electro-pop-soul singer, who grew up in England. Her music is described as "a brand of music that is jazzy, energetic and theatrical". She is best known for her 2013 single "Pata Pata", which received four AFRIMA nominations at the All Africa Music Awards for "Best Video", "Revelation Of The African Continent", "Best African Pop Song" and "Most Promising African Artiste On The Continent". In 2016 TemiDollFace released the single "Beep Beep", ahead of an album release.

Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as Kiddominant is a Nigeria recording producer and disc jockey best known for producing Orezi's hit single "Rihanna" in 2013. He also produced Davido's international hit single Fall which peaked on US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at number 13 and US Hot R&B Songs chart at number 25 on Billboard. According to OkayAfrica, Fall is Nigeria longest-charted pop song in Billboard history. In 2017, he was part of Pulse Nigeria's top 10 record producers to focus on.
