The Surat Metro is an under-construction rapid transit rail system for Surat in the Surat Metropolitan Region, Gujarat state of India. Two corridors with a combined length of 40.35 kilometers are under construction since 18 January 2021. [4] The project is expected to be completed by December 2027 at an estimated cost of ₹12,020.32 crore (US$1.5 billion). [2]

History

In August 2012, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) proposed four rail routes for the metro project. [5] [6] The Government of Gujarat approved two corridors in January 2017.

The union government approved the project on 11 March 2019. [7] It will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited and financed mainly through equity from Government of India and Government of Gujarat on 50:50 basis and loan from bilateral/ multilateral agencies. [8] AFD has committed to lend 250 million euros for the project, which was signed on January 28, 2021. [9] On 9 March 2019, the Public Investment Board (PIB) approved ₹12,000 crore (US$1.5 billion) for the project. [10] On 17 December 2021, Germany Development Bank KfW and Government of India signed a €442.26 million loan pact towards the project. [11]

In June 2020, the construction bids were invited for Phase-1. [12]

The foundation of the project was laid on 18 January 2021 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. [13] [4] Construction was expected to be completed by the end of 2024, [14] However, as of July 2023, the deadline for the completion of the first phase has been rescheduled to December 2027, due to some slowdowns and delays in work. [1]

Route network

Phase 1

The corridors are from Sarthana, Varachha to DREAM City (22-kilometre (14 mi)) and from Bhesan Depot to Saroli (18-kilometre (11 mi)). Sarthana-DREAM City corridor will have 20 stations and Bhesan - Saroli corridor will have 18 stations. Out of approved 40-kilometre (25 mi) corridor, 33-kilometre (21 mi) will be elevated, whereas 7-kilometre (4.3 mi) will be underground.

In Phase 1, 20 metro stations will be built on first corridor from Sarthana to DREAM City route (Red Line) and 18 metro stations will be built on second corridor from Bhesan to Saroli (Green Line). [15] [1]

The Meerut Metro is an under-construction rapid transit system, which will serve the city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is being built in two phases, out of which the first phase with the first line will cover 23.6 km (14.7 mi) with 13 stations, from Modipuram to Meerut South. It will have nine elevated, three underground stations, one at-grade station as the depot station at Modipuram, and four stations integrated with the Delhi–Meerut RRTS on a single corridor, making the metro the first such rapid transit system in India to be merged directly with a regional railway system. The second phase will include a second line covering 15 km (9.3 mi) from Shradhapuri Phase-II to Jagrati Vihar, with 12 stations, out of which seven will elevated and five will be underground, thereby taking the overall length to 38.6 km (24.0 mi). The metro will also be the fastest metro of India, at an operational speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

The Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System, also known as Delhi–Meerut RRTS, Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut RRTS and coloquially Rapid Rail, is an under-construction and partially operational 82.15 km (51.05 mi)-long semi high-speed rail and regional transit corridor that will connect the National Capital Region (NCR) cities of Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. It is the first of the four rapid rail corridors planned under the first phase of the RapidX project managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). It will start from Jangpura as the starting station, run through Sarai Kale Khan, the terminal for the three planned corridors, both in Delhi, and end in Modipuram in Meerut. It will have 16 stations and two depots at Duhai and Modipuram.

Delhi–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is an approved high-speed rail line connecting India's capital Delhi with the city of Ahmedabad. When completed, it will be India's second high-speed rail line. It is also said to be an extension of Mumbai–Ahmedabad HSR corridor.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is an under-construction sports enclave being built in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Once the sports enclave is fully built, it will be one of the largest of its kind in India. The project is being jointly executed with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, and the Government of Gujarat. A primary reason for the sports enclave to be built, is so that the Summer Olympic Games, and other major sporting events could be hosted in India in the future.

Surat high-speed railway station is an under construction high-speed railway station on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. It is located at Antroli near Surat and Kadodara in Gujarat, India. It is the seventh station of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor, after Bilimora station and before Bharuch station. It is scheduled to be completed by December 2024, and is slated to become operational by 2026 along with the opening of the Gujarat section of the high-speed rail corridor. The station will have the third depot of the high-speed rail corridor, just south of it near Niyol railway station.

Surat–Chennai Expressway is an under-construction, 1,271 km (790 mi) long, 4/6-lanes. access-controlled expressway, which will connect the second largest city of Gujarat, Surat, with the capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, in India. It will pass through six states: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It will be operated and maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and will reduce both travel time and distance from around 35 hours to around 18 hours, and from approximately 1,570 km (980 mi) to 1,271 km (790 mi). It will be built at a cost of ₹ 45,000 crore (~US$5.5 billion), which was earlier slated at ₹ 50,000 crore. It will be the second longest expressway in India, after the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway.

Line 2 of Surat Metro also known as The Green Line is an under-construction metro rail line of the Surat Metro, a rapid transit system in Surat, in the state of Gujarat, India.
