Survey camp is a traditional component of civil engineering training, where students do fieldwork to learn about surveying and related practices, such as developing maps. A version of survey camp remains part of the curriculum at schools including Texas A&M University, [1] University of Toronto, [2] Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia, [3] Aryans College of Engineering (Rajpura), [4] and General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. Cornell University started requiring summer survey camp for civil engineering students in the 1870s and conducted it until the early 1960s. [6]
The University of Wisconsin-Madison had a survey camp requirement from 1909 to 1972, because of the importance of surveying to civil engineering in the US military. [7] [8] Vanderbilt University had a summer school for surveying from 1927 to 1960. [9] Tulane University had a summer survey camp from 1918 through the 1970s. [10]
The University of Toronto camp was established in 1919-1920 and has been updated to include water quality sampling, among other topics. [11] [12]
In survey camp, students obtain hands-on experience in the use of surveying instruments. It can include project-based learning to support development of communication and problem-solving skills. [13]
Students may also learn applications such as AutoCAD and Carlson Survey. [1] The students use these programs to take data collected from the field to develop topographic maps of the particular area. The basic aim of the survey camp is to know various works carried out in the industrial field by surveying, which includes determining the topography of particular area with the help of survey work, map study and reconnaissance work.

Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia is a public university in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. It was formerly known as the Tun Hussein Onn Institute of Technology and the Tun Hussein Onn University College of Technology. Along with other public university colleges, KUiTTHO was promoted to full university status since year 2007. Fuertes Observatory is an astronomical observatory located on the North Campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The observatory was designed by L.P. Burnham, Cornell Professor of Architecture and completed in fall of 1917. It was originally used by the Civil Engineering Department as an instructional field office for navigation and surveying. Today, the observatory is primarily used for public outreach, welcoming over two thousand visitors per year with open houses on clear Friday nights.

Camp Columbia State Park/State Forest is a public recreation area and state forest located in the town of Morris in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Nude swimming in US indoor pools was common for men and boys from the late 1880s until the early 1970s, but rare for women and girls. For much of that time period, indoor pool use was primarily for physical education or athletic competition, not recreation. Male nude swimming had been customary in natural bodies of water, which was not viewed as a social problem until the 18th century. When the tradition of skinny-dipping in secluded spots had become more visible with urbanization, indoor pools were first built in the 19th century in part to address this issue by moving male swimming indoors. For the first decades of the 20th century, male nude swimming was associated with a trope of the "old swimming hole" as representing childhood innocence and adult masculinity. In their own classes, nudity was rare for girls based upon an assumption of modesty, but might include young children. Prepubescent boys might be nude in mixed-gender settings, including the presence of female staff, public competitions, and open houses for families.
