The Serpent and the Rope (1960), a semi-autobiographical novel recounting a search for spiritual truth in Europe and India, established him as one of the finest Indian prose stylists and won him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1963. For the entire body of his work, Rao was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1988. Rao's wide-ranging body of work, spanning a number of genres, is seen as a varied and significant contribution to Indian English literature, as well as World literature as a whole.

The film, released on 9 February 1996, is based on Visu's novel of the same name that was serialised in Ananda Vikatan, and bombed at the box-office. It was simultaneously made in Telugu as Neti Savithri with Gollapudi Maruti Rao replacing Visu.
Morning Face is a novel by Mulk Raj Anand and was first published in 1968. The book won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971. The book features Anand's autobiographical narrative that was first used by him in Seven Summers. He delivers the story through a personalized telling of the late independence era politics and history. Anand himself considered the book to be on the structural lines of Raja Rao's The Serpent and the Rope, but separated by the values espoused.
Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani is an Indian television period drama that aired on Zee TV on 27 July 2015. The show initially focused on the love story of Rani Gayatri and Ranaji. However, due to the deaths of their characters, the show focused on Rani, their daughter, and their son-in law, Raja. However, the character of Rani also died, and her lookalike was introduced as Naina. But again the main characters were killed. But the show retained its main lead as it was shown that Raja and Rani had re-taken births as Raj and Rani, respectively. The show went off air on 4 July 2017. The show previously took a seven-year leap, followed by a 12-year leap, followed by a four-month leap, followed by a ten-year leap, and ended by a several years leap, after which these characters died in a car accident, leaving behind their daughter.

The plot based on an aspiring novice writer from a small town who runs away to Mumbai to achieve his dreams. The film was streamed via ZEE5 platform on 22 May 2020 instead of theatrical release due to COVID-19 pandemic in India.
