James Lee Williams (born 12 April 1992), [3] better known by the stage name The Vivienne, is a drag queen, known for being appointed the first UK RuPaul's Drag Race ambassador in 2015, [4] winning the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2019, and later returning to compete in the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars in 2022. [5] As part of her victory, she was awarded her own online television series, later titled The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood. The series premiered on 9 April 2020 on BBC Three and follows her trip to Hollywood to produce her own music video. [6]

Contents

In 2024, she is currently starring as the Wicked Witch of the West in the UK tour of The Wizard of Oz. She is set to reprise the role in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. [7]

Career

The Vivienne chose her name because she was known for wearing Vivienne Westwood clothing, adding the definite article to make it unique. [8] She has worked in many Liverpool bars, including Superstar Boudoir, GBar and Heaven. [9] In May 2015, she was crowned the UK Ambassador of RuPaul's Drag Race . [4]

On 21 August 2019, The Vivienne was announced as one of the ten contestants to be competing in the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK . [10] In September 2019, she participated in Jag Race, a racing competition in collaboration with Jaguar Cars, and raced for Sahir House, a charity based in her hometown of Liverpool that provides a space in which people can speak freely without fear of prejudice, stigma, abuse or exploitation in relation to HIV. [11] In November 2019, she was crowned the first winner of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. [4] In November to December 2019, The Vivienne, alongside the cast of the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK embarked on a tour hosted by Drag Race alum Alyssa Edwards. [12]

The show saw The Vivienne and Baga Chipz reprise their Snatch Game impersonations of Donald Trump and Margaret Thatcher respectively, to host a fictional television news show, and consisted of six episodes as of January 2020. [13] At DragCon UK in January 2020 an additional episode was filmed with The Vivienne and Baga appearing as themselves. [14] Guests on the web series included fellow Drag Race UK alumni Sum Ting Wong as Queen Elizabeth II and Cheryl Hole as Gemma Collins. [15] [16]

In March 2020, World of Wonder announced six-part series The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood, documenting The Vivienne travelling to Los Angeles in order to make a music video. The show premiered on BBC Three on 9 April, and simultaneously started streaming on WOW Presents Plus. [17] [18] The same month, The Vivienne, once again alongside Baga Chipz, started presenting the UK version of I Like to Watch , a web series produced by Netflix in which they humorously review Netflix programming. [19]

In July 2020, The Vivienne voiced as Donald Trump in the BBC Three documentary Trump in Tweets. [20] She was one of the four competitors who appeared in the special Christmas edition of The Great British Sewing Bee that was transmitted on New Year's Eve 2020 on BBC One. [21] In June 2021, The Vivienne made a guest appearance as herself in the ITV soap opera, Emmerdale . [22]

In January 2022, The Vivienne starred in Channel 4's Celebrity Hunted, in aid of Stand Up to Cancer. [23]

In April 2022, The Vivienne was announced as part of the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars , whereby former winners of the franchise returned for the title of "Queen of All Queens". [24] In October 2022, she was announced to be competing in the fifteenth series of ITV ice-skating reality show, Dancing on Ice , setting her to be the first drag artist to participate in the show. [25] On 12 March 2023, The Vivienne finished in third place. [26]

In June 2023, The Vivienne presented the award for "Scene of the Year" at the 2023 British Soap Awards . [27]

Personal life

Williams was born and raised in North Wales and moved to Liverpool at 16 years old. He is of Welsh and Romani heritage. [28]

Williams married David Ludford in 2019. [29] [30] In April 2023, the couple announced their separation. [31]

In June 2023, The Vivienne fell victim to a homophobic attack in a McDonald's restaurant in Liverpool. [32] In a statement, Merseyside Police confirmed that "a man made homophobic comments towards him [The Vivienne] and then proceeded to punch him in the face before fleeing the scene". [33] The Vivienne utilised the attack as a way of highlighting the fact that homophobia still exists in 2023 and for members of the LGBT+ community to remain vigilant when out in public. [34] In December 2023, Alan Whitfield, 51, of Tom Mann Close, Everton, was found guilty of assault motivated by homophobia. [35] He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison with an 18 month suspended sentence on 5 January 2024. [36]

I Like to Watch is a 2019 American web series hosted by drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova. The series was created by Netflix, and streams on the company's YouTube channel. I Like to Watch films its hosts as they view and react to various Netflix Original Programming and licensed films streaming on Netflix. The first season aired from November 21, 2019, to March 21, 2020. A second season, recorded in the duo's homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, premiered on May 23, 2020. The third season, still recorded from home but with the hosts together in person before moving to a new set, premiered on February 20, 2021. The series won a People's Voice Webby Award in 2022. In 2023 the series won a Bronze Anthem Award in the Awareness & Media categories for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition television series, the first in the Drag Race franchise, produced by World of Wonder for Logo TV, WOW Presents Plus, VH1 and, beginning with the fifteenth season, MTV. The show documents RuPaul in the search for "America's next drag superstar". RuPaul plays the role of host, mentor, and head judge for this series, as contestants are given different challenges each week. Contestants are judged by a panel that includes RuPaul, Michelle Visage, an alternating third main judge of either Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews, or Ts Madison, and one or more guest judges, who critique their progress throughout the competition. The title of the show is a play on drag queen and drag racing, and the title sequence and song "Drag Race" both have a drag-racing theme.

RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars is an American reality competition spin off edition of the original RuPaul's Drag Race, which is produced by World of Wonder, for Logo TV and later VH1. The show premiered on October 22, 2012, on Logo TV, before relocating to VH1. However, it was announced on February 20, 2020, on the show's official Twitter account that the fifth season would premiere on June 5, 2020, on Showtime. Following the cast announcement on May 8, 2020, producers announced that the show would remain airing on VH1 instead of Showtime due to the COVID-19 pandemic which caused "various scheduling and programming adjustments". During the episode the contestants had to create girl groups to participate in the challenge; there were two versions of the song released, the first being by Divina de Campo, Baga Chipz and Blu Hydrangea. The song was released on 31 October 2019. The song was also included in the band's debut album, Frock4Life, which was released 11 December 2020. The second series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK began airing on 14 January 2021 on the BBC Three section of BBC iPlayer and WOW Presents Plus streaming service. The series was confirmed and casting was closed on 15 November 2019. Production was suspended mid 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed late 2020. The cast of 12 new queens was announced on 16 December 2020 and the series premiered on 14 January 2021. It was also announced a special episode RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Queens on Lockdown would air, following the queens during the first lockdown. This special episode was released on 12 February.

<i>RuPauls Drag Race UK</i> series 4 Season of television series

The fourth series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK began airing on BBC Three on 22 September 2022. RuPaul returned to his role as main host and head judge, and was again joined on the judging panel by Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and Graham Norton, all of whom returned for their respective fourth series. The series was filmed in Pinewood Studios in February 2022. The cast for the fourth series was revealed on 7 September 2022 on social media. The cast also featured Dakota Schiffer, the first out trans woman to compete in the British version of the show.
