Travel itinerary

A travel itinerary is a schedule of events relating to planned travel, generally including destinations to be visited at specified times and means of transportation to move between those destinations. For example, both the plan of a business trip and the route of a road trip, or the proposed outline of one, are travel itineraries.

The construction of a travel itinerary may be assisted by the use of travel literature, including travel journals and diaries, a guide book containing information for visitors or tourists about the destination, or a trip planner website dedicated to helping the users plan their trips. Typically a travel itinerary is prepared by a travel agent who assists one in conducting their travel for business or leisure. Most commonly a travel agent provides a list of pre-planned travel itineraries to a traveller, who can then pick one that they're most satisfied with. However, with the advent of the internet, online maps, navigation, online trip planners and easier access to travel information in general, travellers, especially the younger ones prefer a more do-it-yourself approach to travel planning. Since a travel itinerary might serve different purposes for different kinds of travellers, it is crucial for a travel agent to know all the characteristics of her/his target of customers. [2] A typical business traveller's itinerary might include information about meetings, events and contacts with some time for leisure travel, efficiently. [3]

Making of reservations

When a proposed itinerary has been finalised, the details need to be entered into an airline reservation system, where the appropriate reservations and bookings are made. In the industry, the travel plan is commonly known as the itinerary and the data on the reservation system is known as a passenger name record (PNR).

The concept of a PNR was first introduced by airlines that needed to exchange reservation information in case passengers required flights of multiple airlines to reach their destination ("interlining"). For this purpose, IATA and ATA have defined standards for interline messaging of PNR and other data through the "ATA/IATA Reservations Interline Message Procedures - Passenger" (AIRIMP). There is no general industry standard for the layout and content of a PNR. In practice, each CRS or hosting system has its own proprietary standards, although common industry needs, including the need to map PNR data easily to AIRIMP messages, has resulted in many general similarities in data content and format between all of the major systems.

Online hotel reservations are a popular method for booking hotel rooms. Travellers can book rooms on a computer by using online security to protect their privacy and financial information and by using several online travel agents to compare prices and facilities at different hotels.

The Eurail Pass, introduced in 1959 and formerly known as Europass or Eurorail Pass, is a rail pass which permits travel through 33 European countries on nearly all railroads and several shipping lines. RTW tickets in the past were generally offered through marketing agreements between airlines on several continents. Now, they are generally offered by airline alliances such as SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld, or by specialist travel agencies that will plan a custom trip for the consumer. Prices vary but are generally in the range of US$2,500–6,000 for an economy class ticket and US$5,000–14,000 for business class. An alternative for a round-the-world ticket is a continent pass.

Airline booking ploys are used by travelers in commercial aviation to lower the price of flying by circumventing airlines' rules about how tickets may be used. A journey planner, trip planner, or route planner is a specialized search engine used to find an optimal means of travelling between two or more given locations, sometimes using more than one transport mode. Searches may be optimized on different criteria, for example fastest, shortest, fewest changes, cheapest. They may be constrained, for example, to leave or arrive at a certain time, to avoid certain waypoints, etc. A single journey may use a sequence of several modes of transport, meaning the system may know about public transport services as well as transport networks for private transportation. Trip planning or journey planning is sometimes distinguished from route planning, which is typically thought of as using private modes of transportation such as cycling, driving, or walking, normally using a single mode at a time. In 2022, the company's mobile app was the most downloaded mobile app in the travel agency category. The early 1990s saw the advent of online diary planners, digital tools that help users keep track of upcoming meetings and events. Users may be executives, event managers, doctors, students, and others. Although the idea of keeping a record of events is not new, digital planners allowed for those plans to be shared on the internet. The desire for effective online organizers and personal information managers (PIMS) has been growing. The web-based Filofax initially satisfied users' organizing needs, followed by ACT!, Time and Chaos, and Microsoft Outlook.

Trekiz is a technology company that provides customized travel planning and booking solutions through its web-based platforms. Trekiz was registered in Hong Kong and its operations center was established in Beijing in 2010. The company's main website, Trekiz.com, is an online travel platform for creating and booking customized, multi-destination travel itineraries in real time. At the time of its launch, Trekiz.com focused on tourism in China, but has since added activities, tours and hotel reservations in other international destinations. Trekiz also offers a business-to-business platform that allows travel industry professionals to expand their business's product base, adjust tour pricing and build more varied itineraries for customers.
