Uniting Nations are a British dance music act formed in Liverpool in 2004. They achieved chart success across Europe. The act was originally made up of Paul Keenan and Daz Sampson as band members, songwriters and producers. After their 2005 hit "Out of Touch", which was the debut and most successful single of the band, Craig Powell joined in as frontman of the band. A number of songs on the Uniting Nations' debut and only album One World , released in 2005 on Gut Records, were also performed by vocalist and session artist Jinian Wilde.

The band had chart success with two initial UK hits, "Out of Touch" and "You and Me". The band's third hit, "Ai No Corrida", a remake of the 1980 song by British musician Chaz Jankel (which was covered by American producer Quincy Jones on his 1981 album The Dude ), featured the vocals of British singer and dancer Laura More. Craig Powell left in March 2006, after the release of the One World album, with the band releasing various recordings until 2008.

In April 2019, the act was revived with Daz Sampson and British singer Nona [1] and recorded a new single called "This Love", a cover of the 1986 song "Is This Love" by American band Survivor. [2] It was released on 14 February 2020 on label JF Productions. [3] The act were also working on a new album. [2]

Career

The biggest hit for Uniting Nations was their debut hit "Out of Touch", a cover of Hall & Oates. The video for the song featured the actor Paul Spicer. The single stayed in the UK Singles Chart charts for 21 weeks, peaking at #7. [4] It also peaked at #5 in Ireland, #8 in Norway, #9 in Finland and the Netherlands. It also charted in Australia, Austria, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.

Uniting Nations' follow-up single was "You and Me". The song was written by the band members. The video for the song featured frontman Craig Powell. Powell also performed the songs live in Uniting Nations performances including on Top of the Pops . The single peaked at #15 in the UK charts. [4] It also reached #3 in Finland, #16 in Denmark, also charting in Ireland and Sweden.[ citation needed ]

Their third single from the album was "Ai No Corrida", which featured the vocals of Laura More and backing vocals of Steve M. Smith and Yolanda Quartey. The single had its UK release on 7 November 2005 which was made to coincide with the band's release of the album. The cover reached the UK Top 20, peaking at #18. [4]

Following the success of the singles on the British charts, the album One World was released on 14 November 2005, and included twelve tracks. The album track "She's Special" carried the vocals of Donovan Blackwood. The album also included an additional extended version of "Out of Touch" titled "Out of Touch (I Love You So Much)", five a cappellas of the album songs and two short samples. Uniting Nations also released various a cappellas as DJ tools and samples for use by remixers. Smash Hits readers and T4 viewers voted Uniting Nations as "Best Dance Act" at their last ever Pollwinners Party in 2005.

Craig Powell left the band in March 2006 for a solo career, with several TV performances as a single released in 2010; he then became a professional mixed martial arts competitor and opened his own gym.

Uniting Nations then released songs that included "Music in Me" and the promotional "High Energy" in 2006 and a fourth official single called "Do It Yourself" in 2007, a cover of American singer Gloria Gaynor's 1975 song of the same name. The band took a break in 2010 to concentrate on writing and producing for other established acts.

Revival

In April 2019, the act was revived with Daz Sampson and British singer Nona [1] and recorded a new single called "This Love", a cover of the 1986 song "Is This Love" by American band Survivor. [2] It was released on 14 February 2020 on label JF Productions. [3] The act were also working on a new album. [2]

Their music is characterised by fast electronic beats, heavy reliance upon samples and the repetition of the name drop "the Cuban Boys" in the background of many of their tracks. They achieved success after being aired on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show with sample-heavy dance tracks and cut-ups and were responsible for the UK No. 4 hit single "Cognoscenti vs. Intelligentsia" which was released through EMI.

Spray is a synth-pop duo from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, consisting of siblings Jenny McLaren and Ricardo Autobahn. Following the demise of their previous band, the Cuban Boys, McLaren and Autobahn released the album Living In Neon on Ninthwave Records in the United States. This was followed in 2003 by the extended single "I Am Gothic". A new album, Children of a Laser God was released online in 2006, along with the single "Run With Us", a cover of the theme tune of the popular 1980's cartoon The Raccoons with the "Michael Trenfield" remix as the main single accompanied with the original version and remixes from JKZ, Absorb, FMU and Diskowarp.

Charles Jeremy "Chaz" Jankel is an English musician and songwriter. In a music career spanning more than 40 years, he came to prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist and keyboardist of the rock band Ian Dury and the Blockheads. With Dury, Jankel co-wrote some of the band's best-known songs including "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" and "Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3".

Gold: Greatest Hits is the first greatest hits album released by British pop group Steps. It was released in 2001 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The lead single from the album was "Chain Reaction", a cover of the Diana Ross hit; the Steps' version reached number 2 in the UK Singles chart and was the group's highest selling single since "Say You'll Be Mine/Better The Devil You Know". The second single from the album, the slow ballad "Words Are Not Enough", was released with a cover of "I Know Him So Well", from ABBAmania. The single was notably Steps' first single to have an accompanying video that was almost fully animated and did not feature a dance routine like their video for "Heartbeat". The single reached number 5 in the UK charts and was their lowest-selling single to date. This song was their last Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, topping the chart for two weeks in December 1984. It also became the duo's fourteenth consecutive top 40 hit since 1980.

John Matthews better known by his stage name Ricardo Autobahn is an English producer, songwriter and musician. He is also known in collaborations with Daz Sampson as in Rikki & Daz and the projects like Barndance Boys, Cuban Boys, and his current project Spray.

Paul Keenan is a songwriter and producer based in Dumbarton, near Glasgow in Scotland. He is best known for co-founding the successful UK dance act Uniting Nations along with its other co-founding member Daz Sampson, Together they had four hit singles, "Out of Touch", "You and Me", "Ai No Corrida" and "Do It Yourself".

"Ai No Corrida" is a song by the English singer and multi-instrumentalist Chaz Jankel, written by Jankel and Kenny Young. The title is based on the Japanese title of the erotic film In the Realm of the Senses. It was first recorded in 1980 and featured on Chaz Jankel's debut album Chas Jankel for A&M Records.

Rikki & Daz, was a pop music duo, formed in 2002 by John Matthews and Daz Sampson. John Matthews of the Cuban Boys fame and also known as Ricardo Autobahn, became Rikki in the duo. He teamed up with Sampson, named just Daz in the duo and went on to release the single, "Rhinestone Cowboy ", a take on Glen Campbell's hit "Rhinestone Cowboy". It featured the country singer in a new vocal for the release, and Campbell appeared in the video. The single went on to reach No. 12 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 16 in the Irish Singles Chart. The pair also contributed separately to a cover of their version of the song with the band Hyperbubble on their 2017 album Western Ware.

The live performance, including appearance on the Top of the Pops, was by Craig Powell.

Jinian Wilde, sometimes Jin Wilde and Wilde!, is an English singer, songwriter, studio vocalist, vocal instructor and musician who has worked with a number of musical projects and with UK's Paris Music. He is also founder of Wilde Rose Studio using the name Dr. VoX. He has collaborated most notably with Uniting Nations, Daz Sampson and since 2007 is lead singer in the David Cross Band, a band formed by David Cross who was the electric violinist of King Crimson.
