The university began as the Higher College of Agriculture and Veterinary Science created in 1922 but with classes only beginning in 1927. In 1948 it was transformed into the Rural University of Minas Gerais. It was federalized in 1969 with its present name.

Line 6 (Orange) is an under construction line of the São Paulo Metro. The first section will be 15.9-kilometre (9.9 mi) long, with 15 stations, and will link the São Joaquim metro station (Line 1 to the district of Brasilândia. The branch is known as the "Colleges line" as it will serve many of them along its route.
