Vamps is a Japanese rock duo formed in 2008 by Hyde (vocalist, rhythm guitarist, lyricist and composer) and K.A.Z (lead guitarist, backing vocalist and composer). Only a year after their founding, Vamps performed its first international tour, ten dates in the United States, and in 2010 they went on their first world tour. Originally signed to Hyde's own record label Vamprose, every release the band has had to date has reached the top ten on the Oricon music chart. In 2013, the group changed labels to Universal Music Group's Delicious Deli Records and produced their worldwide debut release. After several tours and collaborations with Western acts, Vamps worked with outside producers and songwriters for the first time on the 2017 album Underworld before temporarily ceasing all activities at the end of that year.

History

2008–2011

Vamps was formed by Hyde (L'Arc-en-Ciel) and K.A.Z (Oblivion Dust) in 2008. They had been working together on Hyde's solo work since 2003. After years of collaboration, the two finally decided to form their own band and agreed that there was no better way to announce Vamps than getting out in front of the fans right away. Their first material was the single "Love Addict", released on July 2, 2008.

Their first nationwide tour, Vamps Live 2008, kicked off at Zepp Tokyo. The band, having only released one single, played mostly songs from Hyde's solo career. Between August 1 and October 28, they played 46 shows at the Zepp live houses throughout Japan. [1] The band played 6 to 10 shows at each venue and every single show was sold out. Vamps' second single "I Gotta Kick Start Now" was released on March 13, 2009, and was followed by "Evanescent" on May 13.

In July 2009, Vamps went on their Vamps Live 2009 U.S.A. Tour. The tour covered 10 cities in the United States from July 11 - August 1. Stopping in the following cities: New York, two Warped Tour 2009 shows (Hartford & Columbia), Baltimore, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Las Vegas, San Diego, and finishing off in Los Angeles. [2] They had an additional finale US show in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii on board the battleship USS Missouri on September 19. [3] On June 10, 2009, they released their self-titled debut album, Vamps , followed by their fourth single "Sweet Dreams" on September 30.

On January 31, 2010, the band was awarded the Billboard Japan Music Awards Rising International Artist award for their efforts and success with their tour in the US. [4] [5] After releasing the DVD of their US tour on March 17, they released the single "Devil Side" on May 12. Their sixth single "Angel Trip" was released on June 9, followed by their second album, Beast , on July 28, 2010. The band held a free concert in Roppongi Hills on July 30, which was also freely streamed live on several websites. [6]

Vamps embarked on their first world tour in the fall of 2010. Making stops in the following countries: Taiwan, United States, Spain, France, China and Chile. Their seventh single "Memories" was released on December 15, 2010, and contains the B-side "Get Up -Japanese Ver.-", which is an alternative version of "Get Up" that translates some of the English lyrics into Japanese. This recording of the song was used in the Bakuman. anime, which features a fictionalized version of Hyde that is voiced by the singer himself. [7] On July 13, 2011, Vamps released their fourth DVD, Vamps Live 2010 World Tour Chile, which was recorded in Santiago on November 6, 2010, at the Caupolican Theatre.

2013–2017

In February 2013, Vamps announced they were changing record labels to Universal Music Group's Delicious Deli Records. [8] The first release on the label was the home video Vamps Live 2012 on April 24, which was recorded at Zepp Namba in 2012. [8] Vamps, who were recording in Los Angeles, performed at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards Japan on June 22, coming straight from the airport. [9] This was the first performance of the songs from their double A-side single "Ahead/Replay", [9] which was released on July 3, exactly one year and one day since their debut five years ago. [10] The duo released the best-of album Sex Blood Rock n' Roll on September 25, which includes re-recordings of songs, all in English, and is also their first worldwide release. [11] They supported the record with a world tour that took them to Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, London, and finished with shows in Los Angeles and New York where they were supported by Sid Wilson of Slipknot. Vamps headlined the U-Express Live 2014 event at the Saitama Super Arena on March 1, [14] played their second show in London on March 28 and also performed at that year's Download Festival on June 14. [15] Two singles "Get Away/The Jolly Roger" and "Vampire's Love" were released on August 20 and October 8 respectively, [16] [17] with the latter being used for the Japanese release of the American film Dracula Untold . [18] The band then produced their third studio album BloodSuckers on October 29, 2014. [19] It was released in Europe on March 23, 2015, and in the US a day later. [20]

Vamps hosted the VampPark Fest at the Nippon Budokan on February 18 and 19, 2015. In addition to themselves, it included Sixx:A.M., Buckcherry, Sads, Nothing More, Gerard Way and Alexandros. [21] Vamps took part in the Japan Night event held in Jakarta on April 4, alongside several other artists promoting Japanese music. [22] Beginning on April 8, they were a support act for twelve stops on Sixx:A.M.'s North American tour. [23] They also performed at two festivals in Florida, the Fort Rock Festival on April 25 and Welcome to Rockville the following day, [24] their own headlining show at the Best Buy Theater on May 1, [25] and at the Rock on the Range festival on May 15. [26] Vamps returned to South America for four concerts in late September and early October, before being a support act for six shows on Apocalyptica's UK tour in November. [27] [28] They released a collaborative single with Apocalyptica titled "Sin in Justice" on November 20. [29]

The single "Inside of Me" produced by Howard Benson and featuring Chris Motionless was released on August 31, 2016. Its B-side, "Rise or Die", features Richard Z. Kruspe. [30] The music video for "Calling" was released via Loudwire in April 2017. [31] These three tracks and "Sin in Justice" were included on the album Underworld , released on April 26, 2017. Designed to appeal to American audiences, it marks the first time Vamps brought in a producer and co-writers on songs. [32] In September, they opened for Danzig at three concerts in the Western US and headlined their own show at the Roxie Theater. [33]

On December 1, 2017, Vamps announced that they were temporarily ceasing all activities; "Our engines have overheated and we need some time to cool down. As soon as we are at our best temperature and the time is right for our return, we plan to kick back into action in top gear!" [34]

Hideto Takarai, known by his stage name Hyde, is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor. Best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel since 1991, he is also the lead vocalist of Vamps and has a solo career.

Siam Shade was a five-piece Japanese rock band, formed in Tokyo in 1991. The classic line-up of Hideki on vocals, Natchin on bass, Kazuma and Daita on guitar, and Jun-ji on drums broke onto the visual kei scene alongside a multitude of other artists in the early 1990s and enjoyed a decade of relative popularity before disbanding in early 2002. The members have reunited several times since 2007 for one-off concerts and short tours. Outside Japan, Siam Shade is best known for "1/3 no Junjō na Kanjō", which was the sixth ending theme of the Rurouni Kenshin anime. Daita's work on their song "Triptych" was named the 83rd best guitar instrumental by Young Guitar Magazine in 2019.

Hideto Matsumoto, known professionally as hide, was a Japanese musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the rock band X Japan from 1987 to 1997 and a solo artist from 1993 onward. He also formed the United States-based rock supergroup Zilch in 1996.

Kiyonobu Inoue, better known exclusively by his stage name Inoran, is a Japanese musician, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the rhythm guitarist and co-founder of the rock band Luna Sea since 1986. He started his solo career in 1997. Luna Sea disbanded in 2000, and he formed Fake? with Oblivion Dust vocalist Ken Lloyd a year later. In 2005 he left Fake? and founded Tourbillon with Luna Sea vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura and Hiroaki Hayama. He rejoined Luna Sea when they reunited in 2010, and in 2012 formed Muddy Apes with bassist Taka Hirose and guitarist Dean Tidey, both from Feeder, and 8otto's vocalist Maeson.

La'cryma Christi was a Japanese visual kei rock band originally active from 1991 to 2007. At their peak, they were considered one of "the big four of visual kei" alongside Fanatic Crisis, Malice Mizer and Shazna. They reunited for a concert in 2009 at the V-Rock Festival, for their short reunion tour in 2010, and for a 15th anniversary tour in 2012.

D'erlanger is a Japanese rock band from Kyoto Prefecture, formed in 1983 by guitarist Cipher and bassist Seela. While they originally played speed and power metal, after recruiting drummer Tetsu and vocalist Kyo they switched to a punk rock sound for their debut album La Vie En Rose in 1989. Although it was on an indie label, it sold out and was reissued three times that year, earning them a major label record deal with BMG Japan the following year. They released Basilisk in March 1990 and it reached the top five on the charts. However, in December the group suddenly announced their disbandment.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sug</span> Japanese rock band

Sug was a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 2006. The band has released two EPs, five full-length studio albums, and several singles. Until 2009, the band was signed to "Indie PSC", a subdivision of PS Company. As of 2010, they have signed onto a major label, Pony Canyon. The band's tagline in promotional work is "Heavy Positive Rock".

Tourbillon are a Japanese rock trio formed in 2005 by Luna Sea members Ryuichi Kawamura (vocals) and Inoran (guitar), and D-Loop member Hiroaki "H. Hayama" Hayama (keyboards). They reached number three on the Oricon Singles Chart with "Break the Chain", the opening theme of the TV series Kamen Rider Kiva. The group ended activities in 2008 shortly after its release. Tourbillon reunited in 2015, and again in 2023.

Sendai Kamotsu is a Japanese rock band, formed in September 2001 as the comedic side project of the visual kei band Nightmare. It consists of entirely the same members using aliases, with the addition of a programmer. Sendai Kamotsu consists of Chiba, Satty (guitar), Fullface (guitar), Wen Chen Chen (bass), Gigaflare (drums) and Kurihara (programming).

Angelo is a Japanese visual kei rock supergroup, formed in 2006 by three members of Pierrot. Originally a trio of vocalist Kirito, bassist Kohta and drummer Takeo, guitarists Karyu (ex-D'espairsRay) and Giru (ex-Vidoll) joined in 2011. After 15 years and 13 studio albums, Angelo began an indefinite hiatus following two concerts at Yoyogi Daini Taiikukan on January 15 and 16, 2022.

Heidi. is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Tokyo in February 2006. They gained popularity after performing at the memorial concert on the 10th anniversary of the death of the musician hide on May 4, 2008, to tens of thousands of people. Their third album was released in Europe by Gan-Shin records in 2009 and the following year Heidi. signed to major label Geneon Universal Entertainment.

Aldious is a Japanese heavy metal band from Osaka, formed in 2008 by guitarist Yoshi and vocalist Rami. After a few member changes, they released their debut EP Dear Slave the following year and soon after formed their own record label, Bright Star Records. A stabilized line-up including guitarist Toki, bassist Sawa and drummer Aruto was established by 2010. Their first album Deep Exceed (2010) reached the top 15 on the Oricon chart, as did their second Determination (2011). However, Rami announced she was leaving the group in June 2012 and new vocalist Re:NO joined Aldious just one month later. They produced their third album District Zero in 2013 and it became their highest-charting release to date, reaching number 7.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jupiter (band)</span> Japanese visual kei power metal band

Jupiter is a Japanese visual kei symphonic power metal band, formed in 2013 by four of the five members of Versailles. After several personnel changes, guitarists Hizaki and Teru remain the only original members, with drummer Daisuke and vocalist Kuze completing the current lineup.

Destrose was a Japanese heavy metal band formed in 2007. The group remained an independent band their entire career and experienced frequent line-up changes until going on indefinite hiatus in 2015. Although considered pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom, Destrose never achieved commercial success and is best known for the subsequent bands later formed by its many members.
