The Wright StreetLite is a low-floor midibus introduced by Wrightbus in 2010. It was originally available in only one body style (wheel forward) before the door forward and StreetLite Max variants were introduced in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Production of all variants of the StreetLite was briefly suspended due to Wrightbus entering administration in September 2019. [2]
The StreetLite is available in two differing body styles and five lengths between 8.8 metres and 11.5 metres with seating ranging from 33 to 45 passengers. All variants are of the same width and height, except for the StreetVibe, which is offered as a narrower chassis. Wrightbus claims that in each length, the StreetLite offers more seats than the equivalent competitors. [3]
Because of issues with build quality, steering, braking, acceleration and noise, the Streetlite is considered to be an unpopular bus amongst drivers.[ citation needed ]
The StreetLite WF (wheel-forward) was the first model to be launched, first going on sale in 2010. It is available in two lengths of 8.8 metres (29 ft) and 9.5 metres (31 ft), with seating for up to 33 and 37 passengers respectively. To save space in these variants, the axle is positioned ahead of the door, similarly to the StreetLite WF's main competitor, the Optare Solo SR. [4]
The first example entered service with Anglian Bus in October 2010. [5]

The StreetVibe, initially known as the Nu-Track Nu-Vibe concept vehicle, was launched in 2015 following Wrightbus' purchase of welfare bus manufacturer Nu-Track. [6] It is a development of its Nu-Vibe concept vehicle, modified to Wrightbus specifications. The StreetVibe is based on the StreetLite WF, measuring 9 metres (30 ft) long. However, the StreetVibe is 290 mm shorter and 167 mm narrower than a standard StreetLite. As such, the StreetVibe is designed to compete directly with the Optare Solo SR Slimline, another narrow midibus. [7]
The first StreetVibe entered service with East Lothian Council in April 2016, the first of eight examples to be delivered to the council. A further two StreetVibes were delivered to Moray Council in June and July 2016. [8] The largest single order for StreetVibes was placed by the government of Guernsey's buses.gg operation, with 12 initial examples first entering service on the island between April and May 2017. A repeat order for 22 more StreetVibes were delivered to the island in autumn 2018. [9] [10] [11]
In October 2013, VDL Bus & Coach introduced a rebadged variant of the StreetLite WF, known as the Citea MLE, for the mainland European market. [12]
Quick Parking of Haarlem in the Netherlands took delivery of the first production Citea MLE in May 2014. The initial demonstrator vehicle ultimately entered service with Arriva Netherlands in June 2014. Nobina Danmark are the largest operator of the Citea MLE, taking delivery of five examples in December 2014 and a further pair in June 2015. A further two Citea MLEs entered service in Denmark with Keolis Danmark in December 2014. [13]
The Door Forward StreetLite variant, also known as the StreetLite DF, was launched in 2011. [14] It is available in two lengths of 10.2 metres (33 ft) and 10.8 metres (35 ft) with seating for up to 37 and 41 passengers respectively. In this variant the axle is positioned behind the door and there is an option for dual door configuration for Transport for London specifications. The first example was trialled by First London.
The StreetLite Max was launched in 2012. It is 11.5 metres (38 ft) long with capacity for up to 45 passengers seated. [15] [16] In this variant the axle is positioned behind the door like the "door forward" and also has the same Cummins 4-cylinder 210 horsepower engine and Voith DIWA transmission. A Euro VI-compliant version of Cummins engine and Mercedes-Benz OM934 became available in 2013.
The StreetLite Max competes against heavyweight buses such as the Alexander Dennis Enviro300 and Optare Tempo SR as well as other lightweight vehicles such as the Alexander Dennis Enviro200 and Optare Versa. [17] Deliveries of the StreetLite Max commenced in 2012.
The majority of all StreetLites models produced up until 2018 have been the standard diesel variant, with FirstGroup the largest customer of the type. [ citation needed ]
The StreetLite Micro Hybrid was launched in 2013. It is available in all of the standard StreetLite lengths and capacities. While not a "hybrid" in the usual sense, the StreetLite Micro Hybrid recovers energy lost from braking to power the vehicle electrics and compressed air systems, saving up to 10% in fuel costs. The bus itself runs from a conventional StreetLite drivetrain, as opposed to a small diesel engine and electric motor in normal hybrids. [18]
All models of the StreetLite are currently offered as full hybrid-electric vehicles, with the first hybrid StreetLite WF entering service in 2014, followed by the first hybrid StreetLite Maxes which entered service in May 2018 with First South Yorkshire. The hybrid StreetLite Max can be easily distinguished from the standard diesel variants from the presence of an additional grille in the front bumper, which provides cooling to the hybrid battery pack, located over the front axle behind the front door, through cooling channels under the floor in the door area. This grille is not present in the hybrid StreetLite WF, as the hybrid battery pack is located close to the engine at the rear of the bus due to lack of space at the front.
In 2017, Travel South Yorkshire placed an order for 31 hybrid-electric Wright StreetLite Maxes for Sheffield services 1 and 1a. These were to be the first StreetLite Max models to be fitted with fully hybrid technology. The order was split between two operators – 13 for First South Yorkshire's service 1a, an operator who already operated over 100 diesel StreetLites across the city; and 18 for Stagecoach Sheffield's service 1, Stagecoach's first StreetLite Maxes delivered nationally. [19] [20] The first four hybrid StreetLite Maxes were delivered to First South Yorkshire on 26 April 2018, with first entry into service taking place on 10 May (First) and 19 May (Stagecoach).
The wheel-forward and shorter door-forward StreetLite models are also offered as full hybrids. Arriva Shires & Essex took delivery of 13 hybrid StreetLite WFs for its Luton depot in 2014, [21] [22] followed by a further five at its High Wycombe depot in 2015. [23]
The StreetLite EV was launched in 2014. Like the Micro Hybrid, it is available in all of the standard StreetLite lengths and capacities. The StreetLite EV is a battery electric bus with no diesel engine.
In January 2014, Arriva Shires & Essex placed eight EVs into service in Milton Keynes receiving coverage on national news services due to their trial of inductive charging, the first buses of their kind to do so in the UK. [24] [25]
An updated version of the StreetLite EV, the StreetAir EV WF, was launched in August 2016, replacing the standard StreetLite EV.
As at August 2018, over 1,600 had been delivered. The first StreetLites entered service in October 2010 with Anglian Bus. [5] Arriva, FirstGroup, Go-Ahead Group, Rotala and Stagecoach Group have all been purchasers. [26]
It has been operated by Transport for London operators Arriva London, Blue Triangle, First London, London General, Sullivan Buses, Quality Line and Tower Transit. [26] [27] As at May 2020, StreetLite WFs were operating routes 379 and 424, while Wright DFs were operating routes 219, 232, 236, 299, 327, 389 and 399. [28] Safari buses entered service with Knowsley Safari Park.
Bus Vannin on the Isle of Man were the first company to order the StreetLite, ordering 12 [29] – six 9.5m variants and six 10.8m variants. Whilst the 9.5m variants entered service in December 2010 the 10.8m variants which were due in early 2011 were never delivered. Bus Vannin later received their 10.8m StreetLites as ‘63 plates between 2013-14. In 2019, Four of their 10.8m StreetLites were bought by D&G Bus for improvements to their 38 Crewe to Macclesfield Route to make it a 7 day-a-week service. These buses were renumbered as 55-58 with private registrations to match (DG55BUS, DG56BUS, DG57BUS and DG58BUS). As of 2023 these four StreetLites are still with D&G Bus and operate across a multitude of D&G’s Routes, usually operating on either the 31,37,82,85,88 or 89 services.
Padarn Bus took three 9.5 metre StreetLites for services on Anglesey. [30] whilst Maytree Travel obtained six 9.5 metre vehicles. Reading Buses have also taken six 9.5 metre variants. [31] The first large order for 46 was placed by FirstGroup in April 2011. [32]
In February 2013, FirstGroup ordered 179 new StreetLites (mostly the 11.5m Max variant with some 10.8m models ordered) to work alongside the four prototype vehicles already at the company. [33] In January 2014, a further 301 were ordered, with 274 of them featuring 'Micro Hybrid' technology. [34] [35] As at March 2016, FirstGroup operated 570.
In April 2014, Arriva ordered 97 "Micro Hybrid" StreetLites, 70 of which are the Max (11.5m) variant with 27 others of an unspecified length. [36] In March 2015, it ordered a further 50. [37] [38]
The first new Streetlites to enter service in Ireland were delivered to Dublin Bus in 2017 with 2 examples arriving for the 44B route between Glencullen and Dundrum that cannot accommodate double deckers or full length single decks. [39]
In 2018 the National Transport Authority ordered a batch of 88 Streetlites [40] which entered service between 2019 and 2020 on Transport for Ireland publicly funded bus services operated by both the public and private sector. Of these, 40 were allocated to Go-Ahead Ireland in Dublin with Bus Éireann receiving 43, deploying 17 in Waterford, 12 in Dundalk/Drogheda, 7 in Athlone, 5 in Sligo and 2 in Dublin. City Direct operate the remaining 5 in Kilkenny. All vehicles feature the Transport for Ireland livery.
In addition, a handful of Streetlites are also operated by smaller operators, including single vehicles for First Aircoach, Express Bus and Whartons Travel.
In January 2017, a StreetLite commenced a trial with Australian operator Torrens Transit. [41] Three StreetLite Maxes entered service with New Zealand operator Leopard Coachlines in 2017. [42]
Wrightbus secured an exclusivity deal with Mistral, a bus sales and rental company. Mistral were the sole selling agents for the StreetLite and pitched the vehicle as 'Wrightbus+Mistral – the perfect equation'. [43] [44] This exclusivity deal ended in 2012 with the introduction of the Streetlite Max.
The StreetLite played an integral part in the Torch Relay for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Ten Stagecoach South Wales StreetLites were used to shuttle relay runners and event staff between relay starting points. The buses were decorated in a special amber vinyl wrap with lettering for the games. [45]
The Volvo B9TL is a low-floor double-decker bus built by Volvo from 2002 until 2018. It superseded the Volvo Super Olympian and the Volvo B7TL. The 2-axle version has been superseded by the Volvo B5TL in 2014 and the 3-axle version has been superseded by the Volvo B8L in 2018.
Wrightbus is a Northern Irish bus manufacturer and a pioneer of the low-floor bus. The company was established in 1946 by Robert Wright and was later run by his son William Wright, until it was acquired in 2019 by British businessman Jo Bamford.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 is a twin-axle low-floor double-decker bus that was built by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis between 2005 and 2018. It replaced the Alexander ALX400, Dennis Trident and Plaxton President. In 2014, the Enviro400 was succeeded by the updated Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC and production of the classic Enviro400 ceased in 2018.
The VDL DB250 was a twin-axle double-decker bus chassis manufactured by VDL Bus & Coach.
The Wright Eclipse Gemini is a low-floor double-decker bus body that was built by Wrightbus since 2001, based on the single-decker Wright Eclipse design. The second-generation Eclipse Gemini 2 was launched in 2009, followed by the third-generation Gemini 3 in 2013. Additionally, the body was available on Volvo Super Olympian chassis in Hong Kong between 2003 and 2005, marketed as the Wright Explorer.
The VDL SB120 was a low floor light-weight midibus produced from 1999 by VDL Bus & Coach of the Netherlands primarily for the United Kingdom market.

The Wright Pulsar Gemini was a design of double-decker bus bodywork built onto VDL DB250LF chassis by Wrightbus between 2003 and 2006. It was visually almost identical to the Wright Eclipse Gemini that was mounted on the Volvo B7TL and later Volvo B9TL chassis.
The Wright Eclipse is a low-floor single-deck bus body that was built by Wrightbus between 1999 and 2019. The second-generation Eclipse 2 was launched in 2008, followed by the third-generation Eclipse 3 in 2015. The Eclipse, and its sister design the Solar, were named for a solar eclipse which was visible in the UK in 1999, the year of its introduction.
The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a "hop-on hop-off" rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012 with Arriva London on London Buses route 38.
The Wright Gemini 2 is a double-decker bus built by Wrightbus between 2009 and 2013. It was announced in December 2007 but was not named until 2008. It was constructed as a semi-integral vehicle, with chassis modules provided by VDL. The bodywork utilised some lighter materials so that the vehicle was lighter than the Eclipse Gemini and Pulsar Gemini bodied buses. It was available in two versions; the Gemini 2 DL diesel-powered version, and the Gemini 2 HEV diesel-electric hybrid version.
The Volvo B5LH is a low-floor hybrid electric bus chassis for both single-decker buses and double-decker buses manufactured by Volvo between 2008 and 2023. It is the basis for Volvo's integral 7700 Hybrid full low floor city bus and its successor, the 7900 Hybrid from 2011. In 2008, pre-production batches of both types of chassis were manufactured. Serial production started in June 2010. From 2013 it is also available as an articulated bus chassis. First entering service in London, the B5LH is the only current double decker type in service in the United Kingdom that uses a parallel hybrid drive system.
Padarn Bus was a bus company based in Llanberis, Gwynedd. It operated 21 routes in North Wales plus three summer services in Snowdonia National Park. Many of its vehicles and routes were acquired when it merged with larger company KMP. The operator, who were being investigated by North Wales Police over allegations of fraud at the company, closed down on 30 May 2014.

The Wright StreetDeck is an integral double-decker bus manufactured by Wrightbus since 2014, originally delivered as standard with a Daimler OM934 diesel engine. Hybrid-electric, full-electric and hydrogen-powered variants have subsequently been produced. Production of the StreetDeck range was briefly suspended when Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro200 MMC, also marketed as the Alexander Dennis Enviro200, is a single-decker city bus produced by Alexander Dennis since 2014 as the successor to the Enviro200 midibus and Enviro300 full-size bus. The first Enviro200 MMCs entered service with National Express West Midlands in 2015. Notably, Enviro200 MMCs have been modified by Fusion Processing to be used as the basis for the first driverless bus trials in the United Kingdom.

The Wright StreetAir is a low-floor single-decker electric bus design built by Wrightbus in Ballymena, Northern Ireland in 2016 and 17. An integral product based on a single-deck variant of the Wright StreetDeck chassis, the StreetAir replaces the Wright Electrocity in Wrightbus' product range.
The Wright GB Kite is a range of full-size zero-emission single-deck buses manufactured by Wrightbus since 2022. Similar in body style to the diesel powered Wright GB Hawk, the GB Kite is an integral design that can be built as a battery electric vehicle, the Electroliner BEV, and as a fuel cell electric vehicle, the Hydroliner FCEV.
