The Yorkshire Hockey Association runs hockey in Yorkshire, England. The YHA administers the Yorkshire Hockey Leagues and has numerous men's and women's divisions, as well as junior leagues, for a wide range of abilities. It is the county level league for all hockey clubs in Yorkshire as well as some clubs based in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Sheffield has a long history of involvement in sport. Although cricket was the first organised sport, it has gradually been supplanted by football. Both the main two local football teams grew out of cricket teams. Sheffield can claim many firsts in football the most famous one being Sheffield F.C. being the world's first and oldest football club. Today it has a club in every major team sport in England. Sheffield became the first UK National City of Sport in 1995 and is now home to the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Trevor Hockey was a professional footballer. His professional career spanned 16 years, seven clubs and almost 600 appearances, plus nine international caps for Wales.

Leeds has a strong sporting heritage, with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie playing at Headingley Stadium, and Leeds United A.F.C. playing at Elland Road. The Headquarters of the Rugby Football League is based in Leeds. Leeds City Council also offer a wide variety of sport, leisure and fitness sessions both in their leisure centres and the community.

Sheffield Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club based at Abbeydale Sports Club in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The club plays in Midlands Premier, at the fifth level of the English rugby union system, following relegation from National League 2 North at the end of the 2017–18 season.

York Railway Institute is a sports club in York, North Yorkshire, founded in 1886. The club plays football, rugby, tennis and hockey. It is most notable for its football team, which won the Northern Counties East Division One championship during the 1987–88 season.
