Clint Zweifel won the 2008 Missouri state treasurer election, narrowly defeating Republican candidate Brad Lager with 50.5% of the vote.

She was listed in a 2008 article in the New York Times as among seventeen women who may someday run for President of the United States. On November 29, 2010, Steelman announced she would run for the U.S. Senate in 2012. She was defeated in the Republican primary by U.S. Representative Todd Akin.

He is a former member of the Missouri Senate from the 12th District as well as a former member of the Missouri House of Representatives and former candidate for State Treasurer in 2008. Lager ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for Missouri Lieutenant Governor in 2012.
