The Windows Phone 8X by HTC (codenamed Accord) is a smartphone that was announced by HTC Corporation on September 19, 2012. [2]

Availability

North America

United States

The HTC 8x is currently available on T-Mobile US, [3] Verizon, and AT&T. [4] Only the Verizon and AT&T models support LTE. The T-Mobile/International Version doesn't as it uses the Qualcomm MSM8260A chipset. [5] While the 8X has NFC capabilities, wireless charging is only supported by devices on the Verizon Wireless network. [6] Additionally, "Data Sense," a new feature of Windows Phone 8 that helps users keep track of their cellular data usage, was initially only available on Windows Phones connected with the Verizon Wireless network. Data Sense later became available with other carriers. [7]

Vodafone announced that the HTC Windows Phone 8X would be available in the United Kingdom starting 6 February 2013. [8]

Reception

Chuong Nguyen from Gotta Be Mobile in his review wrote: "From a hardware perspective, HTC has done a great job creating a minimalist and modern design. It’s the software still that may be the big barrier for Windows Phone adoption as the platform still trails behind popular rivals iOS and Android in some key areas, including search, voice commands, and voice-guided navigation." and "And while the software is more refined, it just seems that Microsoft is just catching up to rivals, but with Windows Phone 8, it’s still clear that the platform still hasn’t fully caught up quite just yet." [9]

Phil Lavelle from TechRadar wrote: "The HTC 8X promised so much on paper and the excitement leading to it arriving was building up for us. Yet when it arrived, we found it to be a mediocre handset and this is the best of the two WP8 phones HTC is launching. Which means it's not even the best value." [10]

Myriam Joire from Engadget wrote: "Yes, the 8X is a fantastic ambassador to Windows Phone 8, but after using it for several days, we're longing for a similar phone from HTC running Android -- at least until a stronger app ecosystem develops for Microsoft's latest mobile OS." [11]

The HTC 8X won a Red Dot Product Design award in 2013. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of the red dot design award, said: “HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and 8S not only demonstrated an extraordinary design quality, but also showed that design is an integral part of innovative product solutions. We are pleased to award the ‘red dot’ to HTC.” [12]

Some reviewers noted some problems. The phone reboots randomly, which was supposed to be solved after the "Portico" update, but after the update it sometimes continues rebooting randomly. [13] The color coating also peels off revealing a smooth undercoat. [14]

Windows 10

Despite earlier rumours, it is confirmed that the HTC Windows Phone 8X will not be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile. [15]

The HTC Touch, also known as the HTC P3450 or its codename the HTC Elf or the HTC Vogue for the CDMA variant, is a Windows Mobile 6-powered Pocket PC designed and manufactured by HTC. Its main, unique feature is a user interface named TouchFLO that detects a sweeping motion and can distinguish between a finger and a stylus. TouchFLO incorporates stylus-free access to a music player, a photo album, a video player and a picture-based contact book. The global launch of the Touch was in Leicester Square, London, on 5 June 2007, and the phone was initially available in two colours: black and green. The carrier bound names for this phone include Verizon Wireless XV6900, T-Mobile MDA Touch, O2 XDA Nova, Okta Touch and Vodafone VPA Touch.

The Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system includes Office Mobile along with HTML email through Microsoft Outlook Mobile. The phone will come with LTE connectivity and a wireless-charging option. The 820 is the first Nokia Windows Phone OS based smartphone to embed a microSD card slot.

The Windows Phone 8S by HTC was announced by HTC Corporation on September 19, 2012 and released on December 7, 2012 in Canada. It is a cheaper, lower-end version of the Windows Phone 8X by HTC. Despite its availability in Canada, HTC announced that the 8S will not be sold in the United States because the company plans to focus instead on the 8X, which is considered its signature phone on the Windows operating system.

The Nokia Lumia 822 is a smartphone running Windows Phone 8 announced on 29 October 2012. It is exclusively available for Verizon customers. The device is a variant of Nokia Lumia 820. The Lumia 822 supports Qi standard induction charging and LTE connectivity.
