John Schickel (born March 29,1954) is an American Republican politician. He is a member of the Kentucky State Senate,being first elected in 2008. [1] [2]
Schickel earned an M.P.A. degree from Northern Kentucky University. [3] A retired law enforcement officer, [3] he served as a Florence police officer for over a decade,the Boone County jailer from 1987 through 2001,and a U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky from 2002 through 2008. Senator Schickel has filed suit to overturn a $1000 (one thousand dollar) limit on undisclosed gifts to elected officials in Kentucky—as a violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. [6]
The Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution established the direct election of United States senators in each state. The amendment supersedes Article I,Section 3,Clauses 1 and 2 of the Constitution,under which senators were elected by state legislatures. It also alters the procedure for filling vacancies in the Senate,allowing for state legislatures to permit their governors to make temporary appointments until a special election can be held.
Garrard County is a county located east-central Kentucky. As of the 2020 census,the county's population was 16,953. Its county seat is Lancaster. The county was formed in 1796 and was named for James Garrard,Governor of Kentucky from 1796 to 1804. It is a prohibition or dry county,although its county seat,Lancaster,is wet. Lancaster was founded as a collection of log cabins in 1776 near a spring that later provided a constant source of water to early pioneers. It is one of the oldest cities in the Commonwealth. Boonesborough,25 miles to the east,was founded by Daniel Boone in 1775. Lexington,28 miles to the north,was founded in 1775. Stanford,originally known as St. Asaph,is 10 miles south of Lancaster. It too was founded in 1775. The oldest permanent settlement in Kentucky,Harrodsburg,was founded in 1774 and is 18 miles to the west. Garrard's present day courthouse is one of the oldest courthouses in Kentucky in continuous use.

Julian Morton Carroll was an American lawyer and politician from the state of Kentucky. A Democrat,he served as the 54th governor of Kentucky from 1974 to 1979,succeeding Wendell H. Ford,who resigned to accept a seat in the U.S. Senate. He was most recently a member of the Kentucky Senate,representing Anderson,Franklin,Woodford,Gallatin,and Owen counties. He was the first Kentucky governor from the state's far-western Jackson Purchase region. Thelma Stovall,who served as lieutenant governor with him,was the first woman to be elected lieutenant governor of Kentucky.

Edwin Porch Morrow was an American politician,who served as the 40th Governor of Kentucky from 1919 to 1923. He was the only Republican elected to this office between 1907 and 1927. He championed the typical Republican causes of his day,namely equal rights for African-Americans and the use of force to quell violence. Morrow had been schooled in his party's principles by his father,Thomas Z. Morrow,who was its candidate for governor in 1883,and his uncle,William O. Bradley,who was elected governor in 1895. Both men were founding members of the Republican Party in Kentucky.

Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear declined to seek reelection to a second term to instead successfully run for Governor. Republican nominee Daniel Cameron won with 57.8% of the vote. He became the first Republican elected attorney general of Kentucky since Eldon S. Dummit in 1944,and the state's first black attorney general.

These midterm elections occurred during the presidency of Republican Donald Trump and the governorship of Republican Matt Bevin,alongside other elections in the United States. All six of Kentucky's seats in the United States House of Representatives,nineteen of the 38 seats in the Kentucky State Senate,all 100 seats in the Kentucky House of Representatives,and one of the seven seats on the Kentucky Supreme Court were contested. Numerous county and local elections were also contested within the state.
