The Kiryas Joel-Poughkeepsie-Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget, is an area consisting of two counties in New York's Hudson Valley, with the municipalities of Kiryas Joel, Poughkeepsie, and Newburgh as its principal cities. [1] As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 679,221. The area was centered on the urban area of Poughkeepsie-Newburgh. Prior to July 2023, it was known as the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area; whereupon it was renamed to its current name, to reflect population changes among its largest municipalities. The Kiryas Joel-Poughkeepsie-Newburgh MSA is a component of the New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 23,582,649 as of the 2020 census.
In February 2013, the MSA was deleted, and the constituent counties became part of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Areas. [3] During this time, the counties were split into two metropolitan divisions: Orange County was a part of the New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division, while Dutchess County was in the Dutchess County-Putnam County, NY Metropolitan Division. [4] The MSA was restored as a separate entity in September 2018. [5]

As of the census of 2010, there were 670,301 people, 233,890 households, and 164,352 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 78.50% White, 10.10% African American, 0.40% Native American, 2.90% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.20% from other races, and 2.90%% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.7% of the population.
As of the census [6] of 2000, there were 621,517 people, 214,324 households, and 153,660 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 83.68% White, 8.64% African American, 0.29% Native American, 1.96% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.31% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.30% of the population.
The median income for a household in the MSA was $52,572, and the median income for a family was $61,805. Males had a median income of $43,970 versus $30,764 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $22,769.

Poughkeepsie, officially the City of Poughkeepsie, which is separate from the Town of Poughkeepsie around it, is a city in the U.S. state of New York. It is the county seat of Dutchess County, with a 2020 census population of 31,577. Poughkeepsie is in the Hudson River Valley region, midway between the core of the New York metropolitan area and the state capital of Albany. It is a principal city of the Kiryas Joel–Poughkeepsie–Newburgh metropolitan area which belongs to the New York combined statistical area. It is served by the nearby Hudson Valley Regional Airport and Stewart International Airport in Orange County, New York.
The Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad was a railroad in Dutchess County, New York, United States. Its line ran 58.9 miles (94.8 km) northeast from the Hudson River in Fishkill to the Connecticut state line near Millerton. The Dutchess and Columbia Railroad (D&C), was chartered in 1866 to link rural villages with the Hudson River Railroad and New York and Harlem Railroad. The under-construction line was leased by the Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad (BH&E) in 1868. The first segment opened in July 1869, and it reached Pine Plains the following February.
New York State Route 376 (NY 376) is a state highway located entirely within Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley region of New York in the United States. The route begins at an intersection with NY 52 in East Fishkill and passes north through Hopewell Junction and Red Oaks Mill on its way to the city of Poughkeepsie. It ends at a junction with U.S. Route 44 (US 44) and NY 55 east of the city limits in Arlington, a hamlet in the town of Poughkeepsie. NY 376 was originally designated as part of NY 39 in the mid-1920s. In the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, the East Fishkill–Poughkeepsie portion of NY 39 was renumbered to New York State Route 202. NY 202 was renumbered to NY 376 in 1935 to avoid numerical duplication with the new US 202.
