Sport and Recreation South Africa (also known as the Department of Sport and Recreation) was until 2019 the department of the Government of South Africa responsible for sport in South Africa. In June 2019 it was merged with the Department of Arts and Culture to form a new Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. [1]

The heritage sites, museums and monuments of the country also resided under this ministry. The political head of the department was the Minister of Arts and Culture. In June 2019 the department was merged with Sport and Recreation South Africa to form a new Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Nathi Mthethwa South African politician

Emmanuel Nkosinathi "Nathi" Mthethwa is a South African politician who has served as Minister of Arts and Culture since February 2014. He was appointed again in 2019 for his second term, taking also the portfolio of Sport under his wings. He also previously served as Minister for Safety and Security from 2008 to 2014 and as the Chief Whip for the African National Congress in the National Assembly. Cedric Frolick South African politician

Cedric Thomas Frolick, is the current House Chairperson: Committees, Oversight and ICT in the National Assembly of Parliament for the Republic of South Africa. A teacher, politician, anti-apartheid activist. He retired from teaching in 1999 and subsequently became a politician in the National Assembly. On 18 November 2010, the ANC appointed him as the House Chairperson responsible for Committees, ICT and Oversight.

Mathume Joseph "Joe" Phaahla is the currently Deputy Minister of Health in South Africa. Mathume Joseph “Joe” Phaahla was born on 11 July 1957 in Ga-Phaahla, Limpopo. Phaahla studied for a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Natal. It was at university that Phaahla became a member of the Students Representative Council from 1979 to 1981. The following year in 1980, he served as an Executive Member of the Release Mandela Campaign Committee in KwaZulu-Natal. Phaahla was also a founding member of the Azanian Students' Organization (AZASO) at its inaugural Conference in Wilgespruit, Johannesburg, in 1981. At the conference Phaahla was elected President of AZASO a post he held until 1983. During that year, he joined the United Democratic Front (UDF) in KwaZulu Natal and was elected as its Secretary. After completing his studies at the University of Natal, he became a Senior Medical Officer and Superintendant at Mapulaneng Hospital between 1987 and 1990. He subsequently moved to St Ritas Hospital in 1990 as a Medical Superintendent, a position he held until 1994. Phaahla went to Israel in 1992 where he studied for a Diploma in Health Service Management at the University of Haifa, Institute of Science and a Certificate of General Management, Marketing and Finance. Other capacities that Phaahla has served on include being Director of Medical Services in the Department of Health in 1993 and 1994 at the former Lebowa homeland. The advent of democracy saw him become a member of the Provincial Legislature in 1994 until 1997 in the Northern Province. Phaahla was a Member of the Executive Council for Education, Art, Culture and Sport in the Northern Cape Provincial Government from 1997 to 2000. Within the same period, he was appointed the MEC for Health and Welfare Northern Province. In 2000, he was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Sports Commission. He was appointed the Director-General in the Department of Sport and Recreation responsible for organising the 2010 FIFA World Cup until 10 May 2009. On 11 May 2009, he was appointed the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform in South Africa. In October 2010 when he was appointed Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture.

Barbara Creecy South African politician

Barbara Dallas Creecy is a South African politician and previous anti-apartheid activist. A member of the African National Congress, she is currently serving as Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa. She previously served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, having been elected in 1994. In 2004, she was named Gauteng MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. She served until 2009 when she was appointed MEC for Education. Newly elected premier David Makhura moved Creecy to the Gauteng Finance portfolio in 2014.

The Second Cabinet of Cyril Ramaphosa was formed on 29 May 2019 after President Ramaphosa was inaugurated for his first full-term as President of South Africa following the African National Congress's victory in the 2019 South African general election. The cabinet was slightly reduced from 36 portfolios to only 28 portfolios due to the amalgamation of several departments. The cabinet is the third cabinet in Africa to be made completely gender-equal in its composition and the first gender-equal cabinet in South African history.

Pemmy Castelina Pamela Majodina is a South African politician serving as a Member of the National Assembly since 2019. A member of the African National Congress, she is the party's chief whip in the assembly. She was formerly a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature between 2004 and 2019 and a Member of the provincial Executive Council for five different portfolios from 2008 to 2019, respectively. Majodina was a Delegate of the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 2004.

The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) is a department of the Government of South Africa with responsibility for sport, arts, culture and heritage. It was created in June 2019 by the merger of the Department of Arts and Culture with Sport and Recreation South Africa.
