101 East is a multi award-winning weekly television programme, broadcast by Al Jazeera English, that produces in-depth investigative documentaries from across Asia and the Pacific. The show launched in 2006 and operates out of Al Jazeera's Asia bureau in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

101 East has won a number of industry awards including two Walkley awards, an AIB award, a Royal Television Society award, Human Rights Awards, and medals from the New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards. [1] 101 East has also been nominated for three Emmy Awards.

Barnaby Phillips is Director of Communications for the Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI), working to shut down the ivory trade and save Africa's elephants. Previously, he worked as a television and radio correspondent. He was a Senior Correspondent for Al Jazeera English, the 24-hour international television news channel based in Doha in Qatar, and owned by the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network. He was based in the Greek capital of Athens, and later moved to Al Jazeera's main European base in London. He was formerly with the BBC for 15 years and from 2001 was its Southern Africa Correspondent. He has extensive experience in several continents, and reported on major news stories from 1991-2018. His first book, Another Man's War, was published in September 2014. His second book, Loot; Britain and the Benin Bronzes was published in 2021. It tells the story of the Benin Empire, how its treasures were looted in 1897 by the British military, what happened to them next, and examines the current debate about restitution. 'Loot' was shortlisted for the Historical Writers' Association Crown Award. The judges described it as 'a balanced and expertly-written history of how the world-famous Benin bronzes were stolen and their fate, which dives deep into the moral and ethical dilemmas of museums and collectors today.'

The channel was launched on August 20, 2013, to compete with CNN, HLN, MSNBC, Fox News, and in certain markets RT America. The channel, which had persistently low ratings, announced in January 2016 that it would close on 12 April 2016, citing the "economic landscape".

Pailin Wedel is a Thai-American photojournalist, film director and producer best known for directing, producing and co-writing the documentary Hope Frozen (2018), which was picked up for distribution through Netflix in 2020. She served as producer on Operation Thailand, a documentary series that explored Thailand's medical tourism industry, and as a director on 101 East, a weekly current affairs series created by Al Jazeera. Prior to her work in film and video journalism, Wedel created content for multiple publications, including The New York Times and The Washington Post. With her husband, she also founded 2050 Productions, a Bangkok-based documentary team, in 2016.
