11th Separate Public Order Odessa Brigade "Mykhailo Hrushevsky" is a brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with protection of public law and order, and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It was established in 1992 as the 7th Separate National Guard Regiment on the basis of the 42nd Special Motorized Militia Regiment. It is headquartered in Odessa city.
On 2 January 1992, following the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, the 7th regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine was established on the basis of the 42nd Special Motorized Militia Regiment. [1]
From 1992 to 1995, servicemen of the regiment defended the border with Moldova during the Transnistrian conflict, seeing some combat during the Transnistrian war, albeit without direct orders from the Ukrainian government. [2] During the same timespan, the regiment's units performed peacekeeping operations during the Yugoslav wars as a part of the United Nations Protection Force.
On 26 January 1995, the Regiment was subordinated to the Internal Troops of Ukraine and was reorganized into the 22nd Separate Special Motorized Brigade, then into the 12th separate regiment in 1999 and the 33rd Separate Battalion in 2003.
From November 2013 to February 2014, during the Euromaidan and the Revolution of Dignity, the entire regiment performed service and combat tasks in the Kyiv. In 2014, the unit became part of the newly created National Guard of Ukraine as the 49th Public Order Regiment. During 2014–2015, about 400 personnel of the regiment performed combat tasks in the "M" sector of the ATO zone. The regiment saw combat during the 2014 Battle of Mariupol during which on 2 November 2014, a civilian SUV that exploded rigged with explosives, accompanied by a drone of Russian Spetsnaz forces blew up when approaching a roadblock set up by the regiment's personnel, [3] [4] [5] a soldier of the regiment (Mykola Anatoliyovych Rusnak) was immediately killed in the explosion. [6] Lieutenant Colonel Trickster Gennadiy Vasyliovych of the regiment was also seriously wounded and died soon after in the Mariupol hospital. [7] [8] [9] [10]
On 24 August 2015, the regiment was presented with a Combat Flag and the honorary award "For Courage and Bravery" for its actions in the War in Donbass. [11]
On 30 March 2019, a soldier of the regiment (Florya Vitaly Valentynovych) was wounded in a car crash while on duty in Odessa Oblast, then a local who was previously a convicted criminal attacked him and beat him to death, he then attempted to steal his weaponry but was captured by authorities. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] In October 2019, the regiment became the 11th Separate Public Order Brigade and Colonel Vyacheslav Krasnopolsky was appointed as its commander. [18]
On 23 August 2021, the brigade was awarded the honorary name of "Mykhailo Hrushevsky", who was the president of the Central Rada of the Ukrainian People's Republic and a highly influential figure in Ukrainian history, [19] the ribbon of the honorary name was presented on the island of Khortytsia on 14 October 2021. [20]
The brigade has seen combat during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It took part in the 2023 Ukrainian Counteroffensive with a soldier of the brigade (Evgeny Mykolayovych Bonchev) being killed in the village of Mala Tokmachka on 29 August 2023 during a combat operation of the counteroffensive. [21]
The 12th Brigade of Operational Assignment was a military formation of the National Guard of Ukraine. It was part of the Eastern operational territorial association. It was based in Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast.
The 15th Operational Assignment Kara Dag Brigade "Hero of Ukraine Lieutenant Bohdan Zavada" is a brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. It is a part of the Ukrainian Offensive Guard and was established as the 9th Special Purpose Regiment in 1994 at the village of Shiroky in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. It has taken part in multiple engagements throughout the Russo-Ukrainian war and is currently deployed on the frontlines in Pokrovsk. It is currently headquartered in Zaporizhzhia City.
The 21st Separate Public Order Protection Brigade is a law enforcement brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with protection of the law and order as well as the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It was established in 1992 on the basis of the 25th Separate Special Motorized Militia Battalion as the 6th Regiment. The brigade's main headquarters is in Kryvyi Rih but some parts of it are garrisoned at Kropyvnytskyi.
The 23rd Public Order Protection Brigade "Khortytsia" is a Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with protection of the public order and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It was established on January 2, 1992, as the 8th NG Regiment on the basis of the 22nd Separate Special Motorized Militia Battalion. It has seen combat during the War in Donbass and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Its units are headquartered in Zaporizhzhia, Melitopol, Berdyansk and Energodar.
The 31st Public Order Protection Brigade "Major General Oleksandr Radievskyi" is a Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with protection of the public order and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It was established on January 2, 1992, as the 5th NG Regiment on the basis of the 24th Separate Special Motorized Militia Battalion. It has seen combat during the War in Donbas and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It's headquartered in Dnipro.
The 2nd Separate Mixed Galician Brigade is a brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine concerned with multiple roles including the extraction of Ukrainian personnel from the frontlines, logistical and combat support, maintenance of the public law and order, among other roles. It was established on the basis of the 16th Convoy Brigade in February 1992 as the 2nd Convoy Brigade. Its main headquarters is in Lviv although its units are also stationed in Ternopil, Uzhhorod, Drohobych and Rivne.
The 5th Separate Mixed Slovozhansk Brigade is a brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine concerned with multiple roles including the extraction of Ukrainian personnel from the frontlines, logistical and combat support, maintenance of the public law and order, the protection of citizens' safety, administrative buildings and General Consulates amongst other roles. It was established on the basis of the 20th Convoy Brigade in February 1992 as the 5nd Convoy Brigade. It is headquartered in Kharkiv
The 18th Separate Mixed Brigade "Sloviansk" is a brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with law enforcement and protection of Ukrainian territorial integrity. It was established in 1992 as the 13th Regiment on the basis of the 26th battalion of the Internal Troops of the Soviet Union. It is currently headquartered in Sloviansk but was formerly located in Luhansk before it's capture by separatist forces.
The 35th Separate Sumysky Regiment is a regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with law enforcement and protection of Ukrainian territorial integrity. The 50th Separate "Simon Hnatovich Vysochan" Regiment" is a regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with special purpose operations, law enforcement, anti-criminal operations, anti-smuggling operations, mountain patrols and protection of Ukrainian territorial integrity. The 18th Public Order Protection Battalion is battalion of the 11th Public Order Protection Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with law enforcement and maintenance of public order. It was established in 1996 in Yalta but temporarily ceased to exist following the defection of the majority of its personnel to Russia including its commander in 2014 but was reestablished in 2017. It is currently headquartered in Izmail.
The 1st Dnipropetrovsk Regiment for the Protection of particularly important State Objects is a regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with the protection of strategically important sites such as the PA Pivdenmash and the Dnipro Machine-Building Plant. It was established in 1991 and is currently headquartered at Dnipro although formerly a Battalion of the regiment was Garrisoned in Rubizhne as well.
