1851 Light Regiment is part of the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army.
1851 Light Regiment was raised on 12 April 1967 as 185 Light Regiment (Pack) under 12 Artillery Brigade at Bikaner. The first commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel Veer Bahadur Singh. The unit was unique in being the only camel pack artillery regiment of the Indian Army and hence was nicknamed as the cameleers. The unit was redesignated as 1851 Light Regiment in 1984. [1]
The regiment consists of two batteries of Rajputs and one battery of Ahirs. [1]

The Battle of Longewala was one of the first major engagements in the western sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, fought between assaulting Pakistani forces and Indian defenders at the Indian border post of Longewala, in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. The battle was fought between 120 Indian soldiers accompanied by four Hawker Hunter and three HAL Marut fighter-bombers and 2,000–3,000 Pakistani soldiers accompanied by 30–40 tanks.

Lieutenant General Zameer Uddin Shah, PVSM, SM, VSM is a retired senior general of the Indian Army. He last served as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army Staff. After retirement, he served for some time as an administrative member on the bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal. He was the vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.
