The 1871 Invercargill mayoral election was held on 26 August 1871. It was the first mayoral election of the Invercargill municipality.
Former Superintendent of the Southland Province William Wood defeated John Walker Mitchell, becoming the first Mayor of Invercargill.

Sir Timothy Richard Shadbolt is a New Zealand politician. He was the Mayor of Invercargill and previously Mayor of Waitemata City.
Josiah Alfred Hanan, known to his colleagues as Joe Hanan, was a New Zealand politician, cabinet minister, and legislative councillor. He also served as Mayor of Invercargill, and as Chancellor of the University of New Zealand.

Josiah Ralph Hanan, known as Ralph Hanan, was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was Mayor of Invercargill and then represented the Invercargill electorate in Parliament, following in his uncle Josiah Hanan's footsteps. He served in World War II and his injuries ultimately caused his death at age 60. He is best remembered for the abolition of the death penalty, which had been suspended by the Labour Party, but which National was to reintroduce. As Minister of Justice, it was Hanan's role to introduce the legislation to Parliament, but he convinced enough of his party colleagues to vote with the opposition and thus abolished the death penalty in New Zealand.

The Mayor of Invercargill is the head of the municipal government of Invercargill, New Zealand, and leads the Invercargill City Council. The mayor is directly elected using a First Past the Post electoral system every three years. The current mayor is Nobby Clark. Invercargill also has a deputy mayor that is chosen from the council. There have been 44 mayors so far.

He was the first town clerk of Invercargill after it was proclaimed a municipality, serving from 1871 to 1893. He was deputy mayor of Invercargill twice and mayor of Invercargill three times. Scandrett married Susannah Hinton Milstead and had five children.

He was deputy mayor of Invercargill from 1915 to 1916 and mayor of Invercargill twice. He was the father of All Blacks rugby player Billy Stead.
John Walker Mitchell was a Scottish-born New Zealand politician. He immigrated to New Zealand from Australia in 1862. He was a losing candidate in the 1871 Invercargill mayoral election and 1895 Invercargill mayoral election. He was twice mayor of Invercargill and served as Councillor for two terms.
Duncan McFarlane was a Scottish-born New Zealand politician. He was a losing candidate in the 1908 Invercargill mayoral election. He served three terms as councillor. He was mayor of Invercargill twice (1913–1917). His son Duncan McFarlane Jr was mayor of Gore.
