The institution came into its own as a university and gained its current name Central Michigan University in 1959 under the university's 6th president Judson W. Foust.

Francis Edward Barbour was an American college football player and coach and businessman. He played quarterback for the Yale University football team in 1890 and 1891 and helped lead the 1891 Yale team to a perfect 13–0 record and a national championship. He was the head coach of the University of Michigan football team in 1892 and 1893, compiling an overall record of 14–8 in two years as head coach. Barbour later had a lengthy business career. After spending 17 years with the New York Central Railroad, he joined the Beech-Nut Packing Company in 1910 and established its chewing gum business. He remained with Beech-Nut for 38 years and served as chairman of the board from 1946 to 1948.

The 1892 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1892–93 academic year.

The 1896 Central Michigan Normalites football team represented Central Michigan Normal School, later renamed Central Michigan University, as an independent during the 1896 college football season. Central Michigan was founded in 1892 and fielded its first varsity football team in 1896. Under head coach Pete McCormick, the first Central Michigan football team compiled a 3–1 record and outscored their four opponents by a combined total of 62 to 22. All four games were played against high school teams. On October 31, 1896, the Central Michigan football team lost to Alma High School, 14–5, in a game played in Mount Pleasant. On November 21, 1896, Central Michigan defeated Bay City High School by a 14–4 score at Mt. Pleasant.

The Ballpark was a simple multi-purpose athletic field and community space near downtown Gainesville, Florida. It was laid out in the early 1880s and was used by various local amateur and semi-professional teams along with one season of spring training by the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball. The Ballpark also served as the initial home field for the University of Florida's football and baseball teams when they were established during the 1906-1907 academic year.
