San Diego State competed in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The 1930 San Diego State team was led by head coach Walter Herreid in his first season with the Aztecs. They played home games at Navy "Sports" Field. [note 2] The Aztecs finished the season with five wins and four losses (5–4, 3-3 SCIAC). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 112–71 points for the season. This included shutting out their opponents three times and being shut out two times.

  2. Navy "Sports" Field was the original name of what became Lane Field in downtown San Diego. It was converted to a baseball-only configuration in 1936.
  3. The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego fielded a team that played against colleges and other military teams from 1922 to 1964.
  4. The game between the Aztecs and San Diego Marines JV was the first night football game played in San Diego.

The 1939 San Diego Marine Devil Dogs football team represented the United States Marines Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego as an independent during the 1939 college football season. Playing against college football teams from California, Oregon, and Arizona, the Devil Dogs compiled a perfect 11–0 record, shut out five of eleven opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 241 to 51. Major Elmer Hall, who had previously played college football for Oregon, was the team's coach. The Marines challenged the Army and Navy service academy teams to a post-season match, but neither academy accepted the challenge.
