The 1935 New Zealand rugby league season was the 28th season of rugby league that had been played in New Zealand.

International competitions

New Zealand lost a series against Australia 1–2. New Zealand included first and second Test captain Bert Cooke, third Test captain Lou Brown, Ted Mincham, Wally Tittleton, Arthur Kay, Stan Prentice, Roy Powell, Harold Tetley, Cliff Satherley, Billy Glynn, Jim Laird, Lou Hutt, Jim Calder, Cliff Hunt, Herbert Lilburne, Reg Ward, Alf Mitchell, Brian Riley, Eric Fletcher, Ray Lawless and Jim Laird. This was only the second time the Kangaroos had toured New Zealand. [1]

Australia defeated Auckland City 16-8 before 15,000 fans at Carlaw Park. They then defeated a New Zealand XIII 47-31 before winning 36–18 against Auckland Province. [2] Auckland City included Bert Cooke, Lou Brown, Ted Mincham, C Hall, Arthur Kay, Stan Prentice, Roy Powell, Lou Hutt, W Quirke, Bill Telford, Cliff Satherley, Jim Laird and Harold Tetley. Auckland Province included Claude Dempsey, George Tittleton (South Auckland), Wally Tittleton (South Auckland), Kay, Alf Mitchell, Brian Riley, Eric Fletcher, Hutt, J Flanagan, Des Herring, Ray Lawless, Satherley and Tetley. National competitions

Northern Union Cup

Canterbury again held the Northern Union Cup at the end of the season. They defeated the West Coast 28–15 at Monica Park. [3] Jim Amos captained Canterbury while the West Coast included Jim Calder and John Anderson. The next day Canterbury defeated Inangahua in a charity match.

Inter-district competition

Auckland toured the South Island defeating the West Coast 31–14 at Victoria Park and Canterbury 26–13 at Monica Park. The Northern Union Cup was not on the line however, due to Auckland not meeting a 30 June challenge deadline. [1]

Wellington hosted Auckland at Newtown Park.

Canterbury included Reg Ward while Auckland included Bert Cooke, Des Herring and Lou Brown.

Māori

Tāmaki (Auckland) retained the Waitangi Shield, by defeating Tai Tokerau (Northland) 24–8 at Carlaw Park, Auckland. [4]

Club competitions

Auckland

Richmond won the Auckland Rugby League's Fox Memorial Trophy and the Stormont Shield. [5] Newton won the Roope Rooster, Otahuhu won the Sharman Cup and Marist won the Norton Cup.

Mount Albert were awarded senior status for the first time.

Puti Tipene (Steve) Watene played for the City Rovers while Richmond included; Bert Cooke, Ted Mincham, Stan Prentice, Roy Powell, Cliff Satherley, Harold Tetley, Alf Mitchell, Eric Fletcher, Bill Telford and Ray Lawless. [1]

Wellington

St George won the Wellington Rugby League's Appleton Shield. [5]

Canterbury

Addington won the Canterbury Rugby League's Massetti Cup. [5]

Other Competitions

Blackball held the Thacker Shield and received no challenge for the trophy. [3]

Stan Prentice (1903-1982) was an Auckland rugby league player who represented New Zealand in 5 test matches from 1928 to 1935. He was Kiwi #192 when he debuted against England in 1928 when he played in all 3 test matches. He then played in 2 tests against Australia in 1935. Prentice played 141 games for Richmond Rovers, captaining them in the later half of his career. He also represented Auckland on 20 occasions, as well as 5 times for the North Island. He later coached Mount Albert United to the 1939 Fox Memorial title and also coached Auckland in 1939 and 1948 as well as being a selector of the side through many seasons.

Jim Laird was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in 4 test matches in the second row and at hooker. He became the 226th player to represent New Zealand. He also played club rugby league for Ngaruawahia (1930–32), and Marist Old Boys (1932-35). He also played for Waikato representative teams (1930–32), and Auckland (1933-35).

Clifford Allan Martin Satherley was a rugby league player who represented New Zealand in three test matches against Australia in 1935. In the process he became the 232nd player to represent New Zealand. Satherley also played for the North Island representative side along with Auckland. He played his club rugby league for Richmond Rovers and Mount Albert United. He also played representative rugby union for Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato. His rugby union clubs were Manukau Rovers, Ponsonby, Marist Brothers Old Boys, Papamoa (BOP), Frankton Railway (Hamilton), and Technical Old Boys (Hamilton). He also played representative matches for the Te Puke and Hamilton sub-union representative sides.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jack Satherley</span> New Zealand rugby league player (1910 – 1994)

Jack Satherley was a rugby league player. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 5 matches in 1937 and 1938 predominantly at hooker. In the process he became the 255th player to represent New Zealand. He previously played rugby union for Manukau Rovers in Auckland in the early 1930s before switching to the rugby league code in late 1933 when he joined the Richmond Rovers rugby league club. He also represented Auckland, Auckland Pākehā, and the North Island. His older brother was Cliff Satherley who also played rugby league for New Zealand.
