The 1936 New Zealand rugby league season was the 29th season of rugby league that had been played in New Zealand.

International competitions

New Zealand lost two Test matches against Great Britain. New Zealand included; Jack Hemi, Len Scott, George Tittleton, Tommy Trevarthan, Lou Brown, Arthur Kay, Roy Powell, Bill McNeight, Billy Glynn, Jim Calder, Joe Cootes, Frank Pickrang, Puti Tipene (Steve) Watene (c), Claude Dempsey and Ted Mincham.

Great Britain opened the tour by defeating Auckland 22–16 at Carlaw Park. Auckland included; Claude Dempsey, R.Bright, Wally Tittleton, captain Lou Brown, W.Stockley, Arthur Kay, Roy Powell, Angus Gault, Jack Satherley, Bill Breed, Puti Tipene (Steve) Watene, Frank Pickrang and Harold Tetley. [1]

The South Island lost to Great Britain 17–3 at the Show Grounds. [2] South Island included Ces Davison, Bill McNeight, Reg Ward, Billy Glynn and Jim Calder. Jim Amos was the selector and manager.

National competitions

Northern Union Cup

West Coast held the Northern Union Cup at the end of the season, after they defeated Canterbury 21–13 at English Park. [2] This was the West Coast's first win in Christchurch.

Canterbury included Reg Ward and Ces Davison.

Inter-district competition

Auckland played Wellington on King's Birthday weekend. Auckland were coached by Bert Cooke and included John Anderson, captain Harold Tetley, Lou Hutt, Wally Tittleton, Claude Dempsey, Arthur Kay, Brian Riley, Ted Mincham and Roy Powell. [1]

Club competitions

Auckland

Manukau won the Auckland Rugby League's Fox Memorial Trophy. [3] It was Manukau's first season back in the competition and they also won the Roope Rooster knockout. [4]

Richmond won the Stormont Shield, Papakura won the Sharman Cup and Mount Albert won the Norton Cup.

Puti Tipene (Steve) Watene played for Manukau, after being one of the driving forces behind the clubs admittance into the Auckland Rugby League's first division. [1] Other players included Jack Hemi (from the Wairarapa), Jack Brodrick (also from the Wairarapa), Angus Gault (from Waitomo), Tommy Trevarthan (from the Otago Rugby Union), Rangi and Tom Chase (from Taihape) and Frank Pickrang (from the King Country). The team was largely made up of Māori players, a result of Watene's scouting trip to North Island Māori settlements in off-season.

Marist included Alan Clarke, Ted Brimble played for Newton and Claude List played for Mount Albert. [1]

Wellington

St George won the Wellington Rugby League's Appleton Shield. [3]

Canterbury

Hornby won the Canterbury Rugby League's Massetti Cup. [3]

Marist Greymouth drew 9-all with Hornby to retain the Thacker Shield for the West Coast Rugby League. [2]

Jack Raharuhi Hemi was a New Zealand rugby union and league player. He was born in Te Poho-o-Tutawake, Wairarapa, New Zealand on 23 August 1914.

The 1936 Auckland Rugby League season was its 28th. The Fox Memorial was won by Manukau in their first season back in the senior A grade as a stand-alone club since the early 1910s. They also won the Roope Rooster competition when they defeated City Rovers 23 to 10 in the final. Richmond Rovers finished runners up in the Fox Memorial and earned the right to play Manukau for the Stormont Shield. Richmond won the trophy after beating Manukau 30–9 in the Stormont Shield clash. Richmond also won the Phelan Shield after they had been knocked out of the Roope Rooster in the first round. They beat Marist Old Boys 13–9 in the final.

Francis John Pickrang was a rugby union and rugby league player. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 2 tests against England in 1936. In the process he became the 245th player to represent New Zealand. Pickrang also played rugby union for Waitanguru, Maniapoto, Pinedale, Putaruru, and represented King Country Rugby Football Union. In rugby league he played for the Manukau and Ponsonby United clubs in Auckland, as well as representing Auckland, and the North Island. He later moved to Whangārei where he played for the City club and played one match for Northland. Pickrang enlisted in the New Zealand military and fought in World War 2 as part of the 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary Force.

Rangitāwhana Chase was a rugby league player. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 10 matches from 1937 to 1938. In the process he became the 248th player to represent New Zealand. He also represented New Zealand Māori against Australia, as well as the North Island and Auckland. He played his club rugby league in Auckland for the Manukau side. He also represented Whanganui in rugby union and played for the Huia club, as well as making representative appearances for several sub union sides.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Wally Tittleton</span> Rugby league player

Wally Tittleton was a rugby league player who began his career playing in the Waikato of New Zealand. He represented South Auckland (Waikato) and made the New Zealand team before moving to Auckland in 1936 and joining the Richmond Rovers club. Prior to that he had played for the Ngāruawāhia and Taupiri clubs in the Waikato. While in Auckland he made the Auckland team and played for them 7 times. He also played for Auckland Pākehā, and the North Island on several occasions. In total Tittleton played for New Zealand 15 times and when he debuted in 1935 he became Kiwi No. 241. In 1942 he joined the Motor Transport Pool rugby union team which won the Gallaher Shield before rejoining the rugby league code in 1943.

Angus Tait Gault was a rugby league player. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 4 matches in 1937 and 1938. In the process he became the 251st player to represent New Zealand. He played rugby union in the Waitomo area for Hangatiki, and represented Maniapoto in the early to mid 1930s before moving to Auckland and playing rugby league for the Manukau club. He went on to represent Auckland, Auckland Pākehā, the North Island, and ultimately New Zealand.

John Purewa Brodrick (Jack) was a rugby league player. He represented the New Zealand rugby league team in 7 matches in 1937 and 1938. In the process he became the 252nd player to represent New Zealand. He played rugby union in the Bay of Plenty area predominantly for Ruatoki, and represented Bay of Plenty in the mid-1930s, and New Zealand Māori in 1935. He then moved to Auckland and played rugby league for the Manukau club. He represented Auckland, Auckland Māori, the North Island, and New Zealand.
