The 1940 Liga Bet season was the second-tier league of the Palestine League organized by the EIFA. The league was split into three regional divisions: North, Samaria and South. The Samaria division was won by Degel Zion Tel Aviv, while Hapoel Hadera won the North division and a British military team, RSG, which competed in the league as a guest, won the South Division.
At the end of the season, Degel Zion, Hapoel Hadera and Hapoel Rishon LeZion (who finished as runners-up in the South division) competed for promotions to the top division. Hapoel Rishon leZion and Degel Zion won the two top places and were promoted.
8 teams competed in the division, with Hapoel Hadera winning the league with a perfect record.

Hapoel Rishon LeZion F.C. is an Israeli football club based in the city of Rishon LeZion, which currently plays in Liga Leumit, Israel's second football division. Home matches are hosted at the Haberfeld Stadium. In 1991, the club changed its name to Hapoel Ironi Rishon LeZion, and in June 2008 the name was switched back to Hapoel Rishon LeZion following a change in ownership.
The 1954–55 Liga Alef season was the last in which it was the Israel's top football league, as the following season it was replaced by Liga Leumit and became the country's second tier. It consisted of 14 clubs, the 12 from the top division in the previous season and two promoted clubs. It used two points for a win and one for a draw.

Hapoel Kfar Ata of the North Division, Maccabi Nes Tziona and Hapoel HaNamal Jaffa of the South Division were all relegated. Hapoel HaNamal Haifa relegated following suspension, whilst Beitar Netanya and Hapoel Zikhron Ya'akov both withdrew from the league during season. thus, also relegated to Liga Gimel.
The 1953–54 Liga Bet season saw Hapoel Hadera and Beitar Jerusalem promoted to Liga Alef.
The 2009–10 Liga Alef season was the first season since the 1998–99 Liga Alef season, in which Liga Alef regained its status as the third tier of Israeli football, due to the closure of Liga Artzit.

The 2011–12 Liga Bet season saw Tzeirei Bir al-Maksur, Hapoel Migdal HaEmek, Hapoel Azor and Maccabi Sha'arayim win their regional divisions and qualify for promotion play-offs. Hapoel Migdal HaEmek and Maccabi Sha'arayim won the promotion play-offs and promoted to Liga Alef, while Tzeirei Bir al-Maksur and Hapoel Azor played for promotion against the 14th ranked club from Liga Alef, Hapoel Azor winning and gaining promotion as well and Tzeirei Bir al-Maksur losing and remaining in Liga Bet.
