Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, also known as AFC Ajax, Ajax Amsterdam, or commonly Ajax, is a Dutch professional football club based in Amsterdam, that plays in the Eredivisie, the top tier in Dutch football. Historically, Ajax is the most successful club in the Netherlands, with 36 Eredivisie titles and 20 KNVB Cups. Feyenoord Rotterdam is a Dutch professional association football club based in Rotterdam, which plays in the Eredivisie, the top tier in Dutch football. Founded as Wilhelmina in 1908, the club changed to various names before settling on being called after its neighbourhood in 1912 as SC Feijenoord, updated in 1974 to SC Feyenoord, and then to Feyenoord in 1978, when it split from the amateur club under its wing, SC Feyenoord. Since 1937, Feyenoord's home ground has been the Stadion Feijenoord, nicknamed De Kuip, the second largest stadium in The Netherlands.

The Netherlands competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, People's Republic of China. This was announced in an official statement on the NOC*NSF website. In the statement they named the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games as a highlight in sports to which a lot of sportspeople, coaches and the Dutch sports fans would look forward. The Netherlands aimed for a top 10 nations ranking in the Olympics as well as a top 25 ranking in the Paralympics; they ended up ranking 12th at the Games.

The Dutch Eredivisie in the 1957–58 season was contested by 18 teams. At the end of the competition, Door Oefening Sterk (DOS) and SC Enschede shared the lead with 47 points. According to the rules, an extra match was required. It was played at a neutral field and Door Oefening Sterk won the championship by winning 1-0 after extra time.

He is a 4-time Olympian (2008–20) and has also taken 3 World Championships golds on high bar at the 2013, 2014 and 2018 World Championships, the first man to secure this feat on that apparatus. At the 2015 UEC European Track Championships, he collected a total of three gold medals, individually in the sprint and the 1 km time trial, and with Nils van 't Hoenderdaal and Hugo Haak in the team sprint. On 31 Oct 2023, Hoogland beat the 10 year old 1 km world record with the time of 55.433 sec.
