The 8th Lavant Cup was a motor race held on 2 April 1956 at Goodwood Circuit, West Sussex. The race was run over 7 laps, and was won by British driver Roy Salvadori in a Cooper-Climax, setting joint fastest lap in the process. Bob Gerard in a Cooper-Bristol was second and shared fastest lap with Salvadori. John Young was third in a Connaught-Lea Francis. [1]

The race was marred by the death of Bert Rogers, killed when his Tojeiro-Bristol crashed at Lavant Corner. [2] [3]

The 2.367-mile (3.809 km) circuit is situated near Chichester, West Sussex, close to the south coast of England, on the estate of Goodwood House, and completely encircles Chichester/Goodwood Airport. This is the racing circuit dating from 1948, not to be confused with the separate hillclimb course located at Goodwood House and first used in 1936.

John Coombs was a British racing driver and racing team owner. After a driving career in various formulae, including a win in a minor Formula One race, he became a team owner in sports car racing and Formula Two. During the 1960s and 1970s, working closely with Tyrrell Racing, he ran cars for several top drivers of the time, including Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and Jack Brabham.

Salvadori also set fastest lap, and Stirling Moss was on pole position in a 250F but retired with engine problems. Bob Gerard was second in a Cooper T23-Bristol and Horace Gould third in another 250F.

Kenneth McAlpine was third in a Connaught Type A-Lea Francis.

The 2nd West Essex CC Formula 2 Race was a Formula Two motor race held on 27 June 1953 at Snetterton Circuit, Norfolk. The race was run over 10 laps of the circuit, and was won by British driver Kenneth McAlpine in a Connaught Type A-Lea Francis. McAlpine's teammate John Coombs was second and Rodney Nuckey in a Cooper T23-Bristol was third. Roy Salvadori in another Connaught set fastest lap but retired on the last lap with engine failure.

The 13th Lavant Cup was an Intercontinental Formula motor race held on 3 April 1961 at Goodwood Circuit, West Sussex. The race was run over 21 laps of the circuit, and was won by British driver Stirling Moss in a Cooper T53-Climax. Bruce McLaren started from pole, set fastest lap and finished second in another T53. Graham Hill was third in a BRM P48. The event was held on the same day as the 1961 Pau Grand Prix, which compromised the quality of the entry at both meetings.

The 11th Lavant Cup was a motor race, run for Formula Two cars, held on 18 April 1960 at Goodwood Circuit, West Sussex. The race was run over 15 laps of the circuit, and was won by British driver Innes Ireland in a Lotus 18. Ireland had also qualified in pole position, and set fastest lap during the race. Stirling Moss in a Porsche 718/2 was second and Roy Salvadori in a Cooper T51 was third.

The race was run over 7 laps, and was won by British driver Roy Salvadori in a Connaught Type A-Lea Francis, setting fastest lap in the process. Bob Gerrard in a Cooper T23-Bristol was second, just 0.8 seconds behind Salvadori, and Don Beauman was third in another Connaught Type A-Lea Francis.

The 8th Lavant Cup was a motor race, run to Formula Two rules, held on 22 April 1957 at Goodwood Circuit, West Sussex. The race was run over 12 laps, and was won from pole position by British driver Tony Brooks in a Cooper T41-Climax. Brooks had been penalised five seconds for jumping the start but still finished almost 18 seconds ahead of Jack Brabham in a Cooper T43-Climax. Ron Flockhart was third in a Lotus Eleven-Climax. Roy Salvadori set fastest lap in another Cooper T43-Climax but retired with clutch failure.

The race was run over 15 laps, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Cooper T43-Climax. Graham Hill was second in a Lotus 12-Climax and set fastest lap, and Cliff Allison was third in another Lotus 12. Roy Salvadori started from pole position in a Cooper T43-Climax but crashed out on lap two.

The race was run over 15 laps, and was won from pole position by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Cooper T45-Climax. Roy Salvadori was second in a Cooper T43-Climax and set fastest lap, and Jim Russell was third in a Cooper T45-Climax.
