The 8th Lavant Cup was a motor race, run to Formula Two rules, held on 22 April 1957 at Goodwood Circuit, West Sussex. The race was run over 12 laps, and was won from pole position by British driver Tony Brooks in a Cooper T41-Climax. Brooks had been penalised five seconds for jumping the start but still finished almost 18 seconds ahead of Jack Brabham in a Cooper T43-Climax. Ron Flockhart was third in a Lotus Eleven-Climax. Roy Salvadori set fastest lap in another Cooper T43-Climax but retired with clutch failure. [1] [2]

It featured the 1957 World Championship of Drivers, which commenced on 13 January 1957 and ended on 8 September after eight races. Juan Manuel Fangio won his fourth consecutive title, his fifth in total, in his final championship. A feat that would not be beaten until Michael Schumacher in 2003. The season also included numerous non-championship races for Formula One cars. Until the 2006 season, this was the last season during which all championship Grand Prix races were won by cars powered by an engine built by the same constructor that also built chassis.

The T51 was raced in several configurations by various entrants until 1963 and in all no less than 38 drivers were entered to drive T51s in Grand Prix races.

The Cooper T43 was a Formula One and Formula Two racing car designed and built by Cooper Car Company for the 1957 Formula One season, first appearing at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix in a works car for Jack Brabham. The T43 earned a significant place in motor racing history when Stirling Moss drove a Rob Walker Racing Team T43 to win the 1958 Argentine Grand Prix, the first World Drivers' Championship win for a mid-engined car. Despite this achievement, the car was superseded almost immediately by the T45. The T43's last appearance in a World Championship event was the 1960 Italian Grand Prix.
