The Eurovision Song Contest 1957 was the second edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Frankfurt-am-Main, West Germany and was held at the Großer Sendesaal des hessischen Rundfunks on Sunday 3 March 1957. The show was hosted by German actress Anaid Iplicjian. Like the first edition of the contest, this one was still mainly a radio programme, but there was a noticeable increase in the number of people with televisions.
The United Kingdom participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1959. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) organised a national final to select the United Kingdom's entry for the contest. The song selected was "Sing, Little Birdie", performed by Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson. The song placed second in the contest, at the time the United Kingdom's best result in the competition, and remained so until their first victory in 1967.
Germany held a national final to select the song that would represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 1957. The winner was Margot Hielscher with the song "Telefon, Telefon".
The Eurovision Song Contest was first held in 1956, originally conceived through a desire to unite European countries through cross-border television broadcasts following World War II, and in doing so to test the capabilities of international broadcast technology. Following a series of exchange broadcasts in 1954, the European Broadcasting Union commissioned an international song competition, from an idea developed by Sergio Pugliese and Marcel Bezençon and originally based on the Italian Sanremo Music Festival, with seven nations competing in the first edition, held in May 1956 in Lugano, Switzerland.
"La belle amour" was the French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1957, performed in French by Paule Desjardins.
"Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück" was the first German entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1956, performed in German by Walter Andreas Schwarz.
"Telefon, Telefon" was the German entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1957, performed in German by Margot Hielscher.
Denmark took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time at the Eurovision Song Contest 1957, held in Frankfurt, Germany. The Danish entry was chosen during a national final called Dansk Melodi Grand Prix.
The Netherlands were represented in the Eurovision Song Contest 1957 by Corry Brokken with the song "Net als toen" written by Guus Jansen and Willy van Hemert. The Dutch entry was chosen during a national final called Nationaal Songfestival and the country would go on to win the Eurovision Song Contest.
Margot Hielscher was a German singer and film actress. She appeared in over fifty films between and 1939 and 1994.
France took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the second time in 1957, on 3 March 1957. The country was represented by Paul Desjardins with the song "La belle amour". Paule Desjardins was a rather unknown singer at the time of the contest. The song was composed by Guy Lafarge and the lyrics were written by Francis Carco.
Italy used the Sanremo Music Festival to their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 1957, held in Frankfurt, Germany, on 3 March 1957.
Germany was represented by Katja Ebstein, with the song "Diese Welt", at the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 3 April in Dublin. Ebstein was chosen internally to be the German representative, and the song was selected at the German national final, Ein Lied für Dublin, held on 27 February. This was the second of Ebstein's three appearances for Germany at Eurovision and she became the second performer, after Margot Hielscher, to represent the country in successive years.
Großer Sendesaal des Hessischen Rundfunks is a building, music hall and former television studio based in Frankfurt am Main. It was the former headquarters for the Hessischer Rundfunk broadcast. Today it is used as a music hall.
Germany participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The German entry was selected through the national final Unser Song für Dänemark, organised by the German broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). Elaiza represented Germany with the song "Is It Right". In the final, Germany placed 18th, scoring 39 points.

Switzerland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "The Last of Our Kind" written by Christina Maria Rieder, Mike James, Jeff Dawson and Warne Livesey. The song was performed by Rykka. The Swiss entry for the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden was selected through the national final ESC 2016 – Die Entscheidungsshow, organised by the Swiss German speaking broadcaster Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) in collaboration with the other broadcasters part of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Artists that were interested in entering the Swiss national final had the opportunity to apply to one of three open selections with defined submission periods: an online platform where entries could be uploaded for public viewing, which was organised by the Swiss-German broadcaster SRF and the Swiss-Romansh broadcaster Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha (RTR), or by submitting an entry directly to the Swiss-French broadcaster Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) and/or the Swiss-Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione svizzera. A total of 19 entries were selected to advance to an "Expert Check" round; ten entries were selected from the SRF/RTR selection, six entries were selected from the RTS selection and three entries were selected from the RSI selection. The "Expert Check" was held on 6 December 2015 at SRF Studio 5 in Zürich and involved four experts evaluating the live performances of the 19 entries and selecting six entries to advance to the televised national final—three artists and songs from the SRF/RTR candidates, two from the RTS candidates and one from the RSI candidates. The six finalists performed during the national final on 13 February 2016 at the Bodensee Arena in Kreuzlingen where a combination of jury voting and public voting ultimately selected "The Last of Our Kind" performed by Rykka as the winner.
