The 1960 Merdeka Tournament was the fourth edition of the annual football tournament hosted by Malaya. It took place from August 5 to August 14 with nine participating nations. Malaya and South Korea shared the trophy after finishing the final match by 0-0. [1]

Merdeka Tournament is an international friendly football tournament held in Malaysia to commemorate the Independence Day. It is mainly played at Independence Stadium, in Kuala Lumpur. "Merdeka" is the Malay word for independence. As of 2023, the tournament has been held 42 times, though with decreasing frequency in recent decades.

Tan Sri Datuk Abdul Ghani bin Minhat was a football player who represented the team Selangor FA and Negeri Sembilan FA in the 1950s until the late 1960s. He played as a striker and winger while representing Malaya and Malaysia. He was known as the Raja Bola and is considered one of Malaysia's greatest football players.

The qualification for the 1956 AFC Asian Cup consisted of 19 teams separated in three zones. The winner of each zone would join hosts Hong Kong in the final tournament. Qualification was done on a two-legged format, home and away games.

The 1962 Merdeka Tournament was the fifth edition of the annual football tournament hosted by Malaya. It took place from September 8 to September 19 with nine participating nations.

The 1972 Merdeka Tournament was held from 12 July to 29 July 1972 in Malaysia. Twelve teams from 11 nations participated.

The 1986 FIFA World Cup qualification AFC first round was part of the AFC qualifying tournament for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. 27 national teams were separated into an Eastern and Western zone where they were split into groups of 3 or 4, with the group winners progressing to the second round.

Hong Kong competed at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from 18 August to 2 September 2018. Hong Kong made its debut at the Asian Games in 1954 Manila, and the best achievement for the territory was in 2010 Asian Games held in neighboring Guangzhou, finishing with 8 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze medals totaling 40 medals. At the previous edition in held 4 years later in Incheon, the total number of medals increased to 42, but the number of gold medals fell to 6. In Indonesia the performance of local athletes was satisfactory, improving the results obtained in 2010 and 2014 with 46 medals achieving the best results at the games.
